Upland Tops Fountain Valley in Title Game

Share

Upland scored once in the 12th inning and twice in the 13th to beat Fountain Valley, 3-2, in the final of the Woodbridge Easter Classic softball tournament Monday at Harvard Park. Upland also won titles in 1994 and 1996.

Upland (15-6) had its hands full against fifth-ranked Fountain Valley (10-10), which had won seven in a row.

The Barons did not have a baserunner through 5 2/3 innings against pitcher Jamie Canfield (9-4), tournament most valuable player, but had a runner every inning after that and stranded 14. Four times Upland issued intentional walks and got out of jams.

Fountain Valley’s Jennifer Mendoza drove home Colleen Burdick (single and two-base error) in the 12th, and Rocky Staniorski tripled and scored on Inez Vasquez’s single in the 13th. A sacrifice and error put the potential winning run on base, but Natalie King’s sharply hit grounder ended the game.

“The thing that pleased me more than anything else is that both times we got behind, we still kept firing back,” Fountain Valley Coach Cary Baker said.

Burdick (4-6) pitched 12-plus innings, giving up two runs and five hits. King gave up a run and two hits in the 13th.

Still, they found a silver lining.

“No one,” Burdick said, “expected us to get this far.”
