Powerful Canyons Gives Mohney Victory No. 300

College of the Canyons hit six home runs--including two each by David Soto and Chris Yeaman--and Len Mohney recorded his 300th coaching victory in a 21-2 rout of Bakersfield in a Western State Conference South Division baseball game Tuesday at Canyons.

Mohney, in his 12th season, improved his career mark to 300-181 (.624), while Canyons (22-12, 13-8 in conference play) won its fourth in a row and 10th in 11 games. Canyons has won two consecutive division titles.

Soto drove in four runs and Yeaman drove in six. Canyons broke open a 1-1 tie with an 11-run third inning that featured 14 batters and home runs by Soto, Yeaman and Jesse Daggett, whose grand slam was his 11th home run.

Sophomore right-hander Chris Baker (4-4) scattered nine hits over eight innings, striking out seven and walking none. Baker, a graduate of Hart High, retired nine in a row during one stretch.

Ventura 10, Moorpark 7--Ysidro Alfaro had a two-out, two-run single in the 10th inning after Adrian Gascon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to lift Ventura (14-17, 6-13) in a Western State Conference North Division game at Moorpark (9-22, 6-13).

Aaron Dixon drove in two runs with three hits and Andy Super had two hits and scored three runs for the Pirates.

Oxnard 12, Hancock 8--Jess Sanchez had three hits, including a double, and two runs batted in, and Brent Egan had a home run, single and three RBIs for Oxnard (23-9, 14-5) in a Western State Conference North Division game at Oxnard.

SOFTBALL

Canyons 5, Pierce 2--Stacy Champy (10-10) struck out eight and walked two while going the distance in a WSC South Division victory at Pierce.

Andrea Wintermute had a two-run double in the seventh inning for Canyons (12-11, 8-3). Crystal Curran had three hits and drove in two runs, and Alanna Gomez had four hits for Canyons.

Glendale 6, Valley 5--Noreen Spaulding, Missy Scot and Kim Latina each had two hits for the Vaqueros (4-15, 1-7) in a Western State Conference South Division victory.

MEN’S TENNIS

Westmont 6, Cal Lutheran 1--Defending NCAA Division III doubles champion Jenia Karimov, ranked first in the Division III West Region in singles, closed out the regular season with a 25-0 record in singles by defeating Don Sirbuly, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles for host Cal Lutheran (4-18) in a nonconference match.
