Rio Mesa Pushes Ahead in Channel

Greg Ramirez (7-1) of Rio Mesa High scattered seven hits, struck out nine and walked one to help Rio Mesa High take control of the Channel League baseball race with a 9-4 victory over Hueneme on Tuesday at Hueneme.

Frank Tinoco was three for three with three runs batted in and scored twice for the Spartans (16-4, 8-1 in league play). Paul Ayala had two hits and scored three runs.

Robert Avila had two hits and two RBIs for Hueneme (13-7, 5-3).

Buena 14, Oxnard 11--Matt Foster had three hits, including a home run, and Mike Frick had two hits and three RBIs to help the Bulldogs (9-10, 4-4) beat the Yellowjackets (7-7-1, 1-5-1) in a Channel League game at Buena.

Chad Pierson had three hits, including a home run, and Roque Lopez had two hits, including a home run for Oxnard. Mario Castro and Paul McAnulty also had two hits for the Yellowjackets.

Pasadena 2, Crescenta Valley 1--Josh Herman (7-1) yielded a two-run double to Joe Stone in the sixth inning of a Pacific League game at Stengel Field.

Ryan McKnight scored on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly by Luke Peterson for Crescenta Valley (17-3, 7-2).

Crescenta Valley is ranked third in The Times’ regional poll.

Hart 23, Saugus 0--Justin Wiley (4-0) pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts for the Indians in a Foothill League game that was called after five innings because of the 10 run-rule at Hart.

Travis Richardson, who hit a grand slam, drove in five runs with three hits and scored three runs, and Chris Wright drove in four runs with three hits and scored three runs.

Burroughs 7, Canyon 2--Tony Sandoval (3-3) pitched a four-hitter and the Indians (11-9, 6-3) beat the Cowboys (7-13, 3-7) in a Foothill League game at Canyon.

Valencia 9, Burbank 6--Chris Northway had three hits, two stolen bases, one RBI and scored three runs for the Vikings in a Foothill League game at Valencia.

The Vikings (14-7, 6-4) scored seven runs in the third on four hits, three walks and a stolen base.

Jonathan McGinley hit a grand slam for Burbank (4-9, 1-7).

Cleveland 16, San Fernando 6--The Cavaliers (14-5, 7-4) scored nine runs in the sixth inning of a North Valley League game at San Fernando.

Max Santillan struck out 10 and allowed six hits, and also had five hits and three RBIs for Cleveland.

Vince Zuniga had four hits, including two triples, and Jimmy Jackson added three hits and two RBIs for the Cavaliers.

Granada Hills 10, Kennedy 9--Jon Bringuier hit two home runs, and Peter Gunny and Jeremy Rooney each had one for the Highlanders in a North Valley League victory at Kennedy.

Bobby Baca added two doubles for Granada Hills (7-16, 3-8), which had 13 hits.

Dave Hernandez homered for Kennedy (18-6, 7-4).

Harvard-Westlake 8, Chaminade 4--Adam Siegel hit a grand slam in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie for the Wolverines (12-8, 4-3) in a Mission League game at Chaminade.

After Siegel hit his third homer of the season, he came on in the relief and struck out the side in the sixth. James Gildea pitched the seventh for his fourth save.

Matt Berkson had four hits and Matt Thayer had two for the Wolverines. Chris Martinez doubled and singled for Chaminade (9-11-1, 2-4-1).

Montclair Prep 5, Fillmore 2--Tomohiro Kawasumi pitched a five-hitter, striking out four and walking one for the Mounties (10-5) at Fillmore.

Jeff Skobin had three hits and three RBIs, and Anthony DiMeo had three hits for Montclair Prep.

L.A. Baptist 3, Frazier Mountain 0--Tim Feirfeil pitched a six-hitter to win his third consecutive game and extend his scoreless innings streak to 18 in an Alpha League game at Frazier Mountain.

Santa Clara 7, Malibu 4--Terrance Dotsey had two hits and two RBIs for the Saints (8-7, 5-5) in a Frontier League upset of the Sharks (11-4, 7-3) at Santa Clara.

Moorpark 2, Nordhoff 1--Sean Best scored the winning run on an error in the seventh for the Musketeers in a Frontier League game at Moorpark (14-6, 8-2,).

Brian Gilbert (5-1) pitched a five-hitter, striking out three.

Calabasas 6, Santa Paula 2--Randy Curtis’ three-run home run in the first was all the Coyotes (8-11, 6-4) needed against the Cardinals (5-12, 1-9) in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula.

Carpinteria 4, St. Bonaventure 2--McShane Clifton hit his fifth home run and Johnny Perez pitched a six-hitter for the Warriors (9-6-1, 3-4) at Carpinteria in a Tri-Valley League victory.

Oak Park 7, Bishop Diego 0--Jeff Roberts (5-2) pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14, and Rick Spelman had a home run, single and two RBIs for the Eagles (8-7, 3-2) in a Tri-Valley League game at Bishop Diego.

Taft 4, Birmingham 2--Justin Wade (2-5) pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine for the Toreadors (8-11, 5-6) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Taft.

Joseph Rubin pitched a four-hitter for Birmingham (9-14, 0-11), allowing two earned runs.

Viewpoint 4, Oakwood 0--Chaney Sheffield (7-0) pitched a one-hitter, struck out 13 and had a triple, two singles and two RBIs for the Patriots (11-4, 7-0), who registered their 42nd consecutive Liberty League victory at Oakwood.

Alemany 14, Loyola 13--Joey Fama’s two-out triple in the seventh drove in the winning run for the Indians (2-18, 1-8) in a Mission League game at Loyola (8-10, 2-5).
