Pepperdine, Princeton to Stay Up Late

Pepperdine better bring the caffeine.

The Waves (22-4), playing in their first NCAA men’s volleyball tournament since 1992, play Princeton in a semifinal Thursday night.

The match begins at 8:30 p.m. in Honolulu, 11:30 p.m. Pacific time.

Even tougher is the adjustment for the Waves’ opponent, Princeton (16-8), the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association champion.

First serve is at 2:30 a.m. Eastern time.

The other semifinal, between UCLA (26-4) and Lewis (Ill.) University (25-8), begins Thursday at 9:30 p.m. Pacific time.

Morrow honored: Princeton’s Jason Morrow, a former setter at Harvard-Westlake High, was selected the national player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. last week.

Morrow helped the Tigers to their first Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. tournament title.

The Times’ regional high school player of the year in 1996, Morrow had 52 assists and 10 digs in an upset over Penn State in the EIVA championship.

BASEBALL

Bunch of hits: Former Notre Dame High and College of the Canyons outfielder Justin Bunch went five for five on Saturday night to help Kentucky defeat Arkansas in an SEC game. Bunch has hit home runs in five of Kentucky’s last seven games.

FOOTBALL

Good news: Four months after the Cal State Northridge season ended, senior defensive end Dan Lazarovits has learned he’s an All-American.

On the Jewish Sports Review team, that is.

Lazarovits holds the Matador career record for sacks with 20.

Smith soars: Former Chaminade High swimmer Nick Smith, a USC freshman, has been selected the team’s most improved performer for 1998.
