The Conejo Valley Big League team begins Western Regional play today against Oahu, Hawaii, at 5 p.m. at American River College in Sacramento. The winner of the five-team regional advances to the Big League World Series in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Conejo Valley overcame a five-run deficit to win the Southern California Divisional championship, 10-8, over Garden Grove on Thursday night at Behringer Park in La Mirada.

Trailing, 7-2, Conejo Valley (16-1) scored a run in the fifth on Shea Johnson’s second home run of the game, then scored six in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. A two-run single by Joe Yingling and an RBI single by Johnson were the key hits.

Kohut finished 11 strokes behind tournament winner Adam Robinson of Fort Worth, Texas, who shot 66 the final day and finished at 274.

MOTOR SPORTS

Bryan Herta of Valencia, driving on his home track, broke his own track record in Friday’s first day of qualifying for Sunday’s Miller Lite 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington.

Herta, last year’s pole sitter in the race, drove his Team Rahal Reynard-Ford Cosworth to a fast lap of 122.977 mph on the 2.25-mile, 13-turn road course.

If Herta, who graduated from Hart High, remains the fastest driver when qualifying ends today, it would be his third pole of the year and sixth of his career. Herta’s performance beat the record of 122.649 mph he set last year, also on the first day of qualifying. He doesn’t expect his latest mark to last long.

“All I’m thinking about is improving the car for tomorrow,” he said. “It’s going to get a lot faster because it was faster here earlier this year in testing.”

BASKETBALL

Former North Hollywood guard Lindsay Sotero-Higa will attend Cal State Fullerton on a basketball scholarship.

Sotero-Higa, who planned to attend Ventura College, received a late offer from the Titans on Thursday. She visited the campus and signed a letter of intent the same day.

“It was pretty overwhelming, all in one day,” she said.

An All-City selection, Sotero-Higa averaged 9.1 points, 4.3 assists and three steals per game last season for the Huskies.
