Hilde Wins Third Event at Diving Championships

Michael Hilde of Mission Viejo won the 13-and-under boys’ one-meter event at the Junior National Diving Championships Friday in Largo, Fla.

It was the third victory at the meet for Hilde, who earlier won the platform and three-meter events. Hilde scored 308.55 points to beat Ventura’s Dwight Dumais, who finished second with a score of 300.84.

Mission Viejo’s Erica Sorgi leads going into today’s final of the 16-18 girls’ one-meter event with 425.30 points. Kristen Marquis of San Juan Capistrano also qualified for the final, finishing fifth with 390.75.

In the girls’ platform: Sorgi was unable to knock off defending champion Lindsay Long (Lakeside Park, Ky.), who scored 474.48 points for the title. Sorgi took second with 435.03.

Candie Kung of Fountain Valley won her third-round match but was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the United States Girls’ Junior Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Kung beat Erin Simmons of The Woodlands, Texas, 1 up but lost by the same score to Jessica Reese of Santa Rosa.

Reese plays Brittany Straza of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kristin Thompson of Napa meets Leigh Anne Hardin of Martinsville, Ind., in the semifinals.
