Conejo Valley Wins National Title, 10-0

Joe Yingling hit two home runs and Tyler Johnson threw a one-hitter to help Conejo Valley defeat Macon (Ga.), 10-0, in the national championship game of the Big League Baseball World Series for 17- and 18-year-olds at Floyd Hull Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Wednesday.

Conejo Valley (24-1) will play Venezuela for the World Series title at 9 a.m. EST on Saturday. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.

Conejo Valley scored seven runs in the fifth against Macon to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Danny Greene homered to start the inning and Shea Johnson followed with another.

TRACK AND FIELD

Laszlo Tabori, the long-time coach of the San Fernando Valley Track Club, will attend a ceremony in Queensland, Australia, on Sept. 16 that will honor several 1,500-meter finalists from the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.

Tabori placed fourth in the 1,500 and sixth in the 5,000 in the 1956 Games before defecting from Hungary to the United States.

Ron Delany of Ireland, the 1956 Olympic champion, Brian Hewson of Great Britain, John Landy and Merv Lincoln of Australia and Neville Scott and Murray Halberg of New Zealand are also expected to be honored.

VOLLEYBALL

Laura Szymanski, a 6-foot opposite hitter from Berlin, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge and is expected to play for the Matadors this season.

Szymanski is a former member of the German junior team.

In other developments, 6-1 middle blocker-outside hitter Holli Sierra will use the upcoming season as a medical redshirt year.

Sierra averaged a team-high 3.12 kills per game last year as a sophomore.

SOFTBALL

Jodi Eyraud has been hired as the coach at Cal Lutheran.

Eyraud guided Pierce to a 16-15 record and a third-place finish in the Western State Conference South Division last season.

GOLF

Justin Ohye of Calabasas shot one-under-par 71 and is tied for third after the first round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Izzo Colorado Junior Roundup on Wednesday at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, Colo.
