Harvard-Westlake Can’t Dance on Playoff Night

From Staff Reports

It appears Harvard-Westlake players won’t be going to the big dance.

Harvard-Westlake school officials unsuccessfully tried to get the Wolverines’ Southern Section Division VII semifinal against Los Altos moved to Friday night.

Instead, the game will be played as scheduled--on Saturday night at Pierce College, in direct conflict with a school dance.

“I’ve got to be honest, I’ve got two [daughters], and I feel bad for the girls who have dates,” Coach Dave Bennett said. “We thought Los Altos would cooperate with us and move it to Friday, but they said no and they have every right to do that.”

In other semifinals on Saturday night starting at 7:30, Alemany plays Hart in a Division III game at College of the Canyons, Hueneme hosts San Luis Obispo in a Division IV game and Paraclete meets Cathedral at Antelope Valley College.

In semifinals on Friday, Valencia plays at St. Paul in a Division III game, Calabasas meets St. Monica at St. Bernard High in a Division XI game, and Kilpatrick faces Beaumont at Newbury Park High in a Division XII game.

In a City Championship semifinal, Taft meets Dorsey at Fremont High at 7 p.m. Friday. Also at that time in City Division semifinals, Reseda plays Manual Arts at Jackie Robinson Stadium and Van Nuys faces Chatsworth at Birmingham High.

Harvard-Westlake might be without left tackle Spencer Torgan, who suffered a knee injury in the Wolverines’ 42-30 victory over Pioneer last week.

Torgan, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound junior, was examined by a doctor on Monday and did not practice.

Hart quarterback Kyle Boller won’t be breaking any national single-season passing records this weekend.

Boller has passed for 4,487 yards, which is 170 yards short of the 4,656 yards Phillip Deas of Evangel Christian High in Shreveport, La., passed for in 1996.

Deas held the national record entering this season, but his standard has been surpassed by

J.R. House of West Virginia’s Nitro High. House already has passed for 4,927 yards and he still has one game left to play.

Boller and Hart face Alemany on Saturday night at College of the Canyons. If Hart wins, Boller will get another game--and a shot at the record--next week in the Division III championship game.

Linebacker Adam Fabela of Littlerock High was chosen most valuable player of the Golden League. Ben Smith of Littlerock was lineman of the year and Rodney Woods of Littlerock was back of the year.

Robert LaPlante of Lancaster was kicker of the year.
