Late 3-Pointer Helps Eagles Get Past Loara

Jeff Blackburn made a three-pointer with eight seconds to left in the game and one second left on the shot clock, helping Santa Margarita to a 57-51 quarterfinal victory over Loara in the National Sports Grill boys’ basketball tournament.

Santa Margarita (2-0) led, 54-51, when Blackburn sealed the victory with his 20-foot shot. He finished with seven points.

Spencer Gloger led the Eagles with 24 points, including four three-pointers.

Herbert Gracia scored 16 points and Wes Wardrop added 15 for Loara (1-1).

In other tournament games:

Troy 58, Whittier California 57 (OT)--Mark Alberg hit a jumper with 10 seconds left in overtime to win the game. Chris Frazier of California sent the quarterfinal into overtime when he scored with seconds left in regulation.

Servite 52, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 45--John Morris scored 13 points for Servite and teammate Matt Ponsford had 11 in the consolation game.

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

Bolsa Grande 81, Savanna 79--After losing Jon James in the second quarter, Bolsa Grande trailed, 79-73, with one minute left before the Matadors used a 8-0 run, capped by Jason Cato’s layup to win the game. Solomon Brown scored 28 for Savanna.

In the Coyote Classic boys’ basketball tournament:

Buena Park 52, Kennedy 38--Six-foot-six senior Matt Okoro scored 20 points, blocked four shots and grabbed 13 rebounds for Buena Park in pool play. Matt Jimmerson scored 21 points for Kennedy.

Rancho Alamitos 66, Saddleback 52--Willie Montgomery scored 21 points and Cuby Vantich had 17 points for Rancho Alamitos (1-1).

Ben Hughes led Saddleback (0-2) with 17 points.

In the Pacific Shores boys’ basketball tournament:

University 84, South Torrance 60--Larry Brown had 18 points and eight assists and Andy Lawrence scored all 17 of his points in the first half for University (1-1), which shot 72% from the field in building a 23-point halftime lead.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Mission Viejo 57, Santa Ana 51--Francis Ireifej scored 19 points for Mission Viejo (1-0), which trailed by one at the half.

In the Irvine-Century girls’ basketball tournament:

Foothill 72, Aliso Niguel 36--Kristen Mann scored 18 points and Chavaughn Brown had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Foothill (1-0). Aliso Niguel is 1-2.

In the Fullerton Tip-Off Classic:

Garden Grove 41, Santa Ana 25--Gloria Rojas scored 22 points and Erin Deane had nine rebounds to lead Garden Grove (2-0) in pool play. The Argonauts will play in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Troy 63, Rosary 56--Veronica Johns-Richardson scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Troy (2-0).

Maggie Barnett scored 27 points to lead Rosary (1-1).

In the Woodbridge tournament:

Mater Dei 63, Tustin 47--Maile Shimoda scored 17 to points to lead Mater Dei (1-1). The Monarchs held Tustin (1-1) to one second-quarter point, taking a 41-16 halftime lead in the pool-play game.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Aliso Niguel 2, Irvine 1--Aliso Niguel scored both of its goals in the second half as Thomas Corwin scored first, followed by Mike Carrol’s goal a few minutes later. Brock Schermerhorn assisted on both goals.

Brea Olinda 1, Servite 0--Adam Roth scored the game-winner off a corner kick in the 60th minute for Brea Olinda (2-0), which played a man short over the final 30 minutes.

Fairmont 3, Riverside Woodcrest 3--Stephen Park scored three goals for Fairmont (0-0-1), which took a 3-2 lead, before Aaron Chandler scored the tying goal for Woodcrest (0-0-1) with less than two minutes left in the game.

Fountain Valley 1, Long Beach Poly 0--Fountain Valley’s Mario Saenz scored in the 55th minute on an assist from Cliff McKinley. Pejimter Fatzaun stopped four shots in goal for the Barons (2-0), including a penalty kick in the 35th minute.

Huntington Beach 2, Long Beach Wilson 1--Sophomore midfielder Drew McAthy scored two first-half goals to lead host Huntington Beach (2-0).

Katella 1, Savanna 1--David Hernandez scored a goal the visiting Savanna (0-0-1) and Mo Hungerford scored for Katella (0-0-1).

Santa Margarita 0, Capistrano Valley 0--Both teams recorded seven saves. Zack Mikelson had three and Matt Guzzetta had four, for host Capistrano Valley (0-0-1) and Erick Foss had seven for Santa Margarita (0-0-1).

University 2, Calvary Chapel 1--Jeremy Collins and Matt Larson scored in the final four minutes for University (1-0). Julian De Leon’s goal had given Calvary Chapel (0-2) a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Los Alamitos 1, Irvine 0--Kaeli Kentner scored the winning goal for visiting Los Alamitos (1-0) with 10 minutes left in the game. Irvine is 0-1.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Dana Hills 7, Huntington Beach 3--Annie Babcock scored four goals and Dana Tucker had two for Dana Hills (1-0).
