Harvard-Westlake Proves Its Points

If the Harvard-Westlake High girls’ basketball team was seeking revenge, the Wolverines got it and then some.

After losing to North Hollywood in overtime last season, the Wolverines rolled to a 76-48 victory Monday night over the Huskies in a nonleague game at North Hollywood.

Harvard-Westlake Coach Brian Taylor said his team was also motivated by its 60-38 loss to City power Palisades last week.

“We just wanted to show (North Hollywood) we were a better team,” Taylor said.

That was obvious from the start. The Wolverines (2-1), ranked No. 7 in the region by The Times, opened up a 24-13 lead after one quarter and never trailed the fifth-ranked Huskies (3-2).

Harvard-Westlake was especially overpowering underneath the basket, led by center Omelogo Udeze.

The 6-foot senior scored 18 points in the first half and finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds.

She also received strong support from front-line teammates L’tanya Robnett and Bamgbose Rolake. Robnett scored 16 points and Rolake had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

“She (Udeze) was a force tonight,” Taylor said. “She did a good job on the boards. Our big people really stepped up tonight.”

On the other hand, it was a disappointment for North Hollywood after a strong second-place finish behind Washington at the Washington tournament last week.

It wasn’t what Coach Rich Allen had hoped for in his team’s home opener.

“I don’t know what happened,” Allen said. “We knew they were a good team and we prepared for them. But we just got outhustled and outplayed.”

The Huskies were led by Markia Derby and Angelle Hill with 12 points each and Richelle Sherman with 11 points.

Brooke Porter had 10 points for Harvard-Westlake.
