No. 5 Marina Easily Defeats Esperanza, 59-51

Chanda McLeod had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Natalie Nakase had 10 points and eight assists for Marina in a 59-51 victory over Esperanza Saturday at Marina.

The Vikings (21-4, 8-1), the county’s fifth-ranked team, clinched a tie for the Sunset League title with the victory and can win it outright against Edison on Thursday.

Second-ranked Esperanza (17-8, 7-2) trailed by 13 points twice in the game and got as close as four, 53-49, before the Vikings put them away.

In the Garden Grove League wrestling individual finals:

Los Amigos qualifies 11--Heavyweight Rich Pador was named outstanding wrestler of the upper weight classes. The Lobos had 11 wrestlers finish in first or second to advance to the Southern Section Division IV championships.

Rancho Alamitos’ Albert Valencia was named outstanding wrestler of the lower weight classes.

Santiago had eight wrestlers advance to the Southern Section finals. Leading the way was Daniel Melendez, who is 35-0 this year.

In the Sea View League wrestling finals:

El Toro captures title--El Toro finished with 180.5 points at the Sea View League finals to edge Irvine, the defending champion, by 4.5 points. Five Irvine wrestlers won their weight classes and three from El Toro won individual league titles.

Newport Harbor, which had four individual league champions, came in third with 139 points, followed by Santa Margarita (93 points), Woodbridge (56) and Corona del Mar (36 points).

Thirteen El Toro wrestlers qualified for the Southern Section championships by placing in the top three of their weight classes.
