DIVISION IV-AA
Defending champion: Playa del Rey St. Bernard.
Top teams: St. Bernard (22-4); Calvary Chapel (21-5); Lancaster Paraclete (19-5); Woodland Hills Louisville (15-6).
Dark horse: Morro Bay (13-10) traditionally is well-coached, very disciplined and stays close to the end.
Top players: Leah Borders (Santa Fe Springs St. Paul); Nadia Clark (Twentynine Palms); Monique Flores (LaSalle); T.J. Gause (Calvary Chapel); Leeane Jensen (Morro Bay); Kristi Jepsen (St. Paul); Cathy Joens (Calvary Chapel); Jackie Kolesar (Paraclete); Christine Lambert (Paraclete); Susanna Murley (La Reina); Kori Przygocki (Calvary Chapel); Christy Ring (Calvary Chapel); Tina Tharp (Rosamond); Erica Waetjen (Calvary Chapel).
Notes: St. Bernard defeated Santa Ynez in last year’s final, 68-50, avenging an earlier loss. . . . It doesn’t pay to have only 494 students for Calvary Chapel. The Eagles are the second-smallest team in the division, all because they exceeded the 480-student cutoff point. Still, they had four starters back from last season and added two more starters, transfers Cathy Joens from Woodbridge and Erica Waetjen from Huntington Beach. . . . Any team that beats St. Bernard better be prepared to run--it’s all they know how to do.
