Wilson Girls Shoot for Water Polo Title

Long Beach Wilson is the top-seeded team in Division I, Santa Barbara is No. 1 in Division II and Fullerton Rosary is the top-seeded team in Division III for the girls’ water polo playoffs.

This is the first season that the Southern Section has sponsored championships in girls’ water polo and Wilson is trying to duplicate the championship won by its boys’ team last fall.

First-round games in 16-team Division I and II tournaments are Friday. The 32-team Division III tournament began Wednesday.

Championship matches for all divisions will be played March 2 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

First-round games in the soccer playoffs begin Friday with teams competing for titles in five boys’ and four girls’ divisions.

Championship games will be played March 6 or 7 at Cerritos Gahr High.

Santa Ana Saddleback is the top-seeded boys’ team and Capistrano Valley the top-seeded girls’ team in Division I. Divisions are based on enrollment.

The top-four seeded teams in each division of the boys’ competition:

Division I--Santa Ana Saddleback, Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, Loyola and Arcadia.

Division II--Riverside Poly, San Clemente, San Marcos and Irvine Woodbridge.

Division III--Santa Margarita, Laguna Hills, Cathedral City and Servite.

Division IV--San Luis Obispo, Laguna Beach, Harvard-Westlake and Torrance Bishop Montgomery.

Division V--Orange Lutheran, Riverside Notre Dame, San Bernardino Aquinas and San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s.

The top-four seeded teams in each division of the girls’ competition:

Division I--Capistrano Valley, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Mission Viejo and Newhall Hart.

Division II--South Torrance, West Torrance, Whittier La Serna and Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Division III--West Hills Chaminade, Glendora St. Lucy’s, La Canada and South Pasadena.

Division IV--Sierra Madre Maranatha, Ventura St. Bonaventure, Pasadena Westridge and Ontario Christian.
