Simi Valley Rolls Over Santa Maria

Rafael Berumen scored 26 points to lead Simi Valley High to a 74-62 victory over Santa Maria in a Southern Section Division I-AA first-round boys’ basketball playoff game Friday night at Simi Valley.

The Pioneers (23-5), who are ranked No. 4 in The Times’ regional poll, outscored Santa Maria, 23-6, in the second quarter to take a 40-21 halftime lead.

Branduinn Fullove had 13 points and seven assists, and Ian Boys scored 11 points for Simi Valley.

In other Division I-AA playoff openers:

Diamond Bar 79, Palmdale 76--Kerry Yates scored 29 points for Palmdale (15-11) in an overtime game at Diamond Bar.

With Palmdale trailing, 77-74, with 12 seconds remaining in overtime, Yates was fouled behind the three-point arc by Brian Pichon. Yates made the second and third free throws to cut the deficit to one.

Brad Wright, who scored 25 points, made two free throws for Diamond Bar (23-4) with seven seconds left. Palmdale failed to get off a shot in the waning seconds.

Palmdale’s Eric Brown, who scored 15 points, sent the game into overtime by blocking Pichon’s layup attempt with two seconds left in regulation.

Aaron Winchester scored 20 points for Palmdale.

Oxnard 54, Los Alamitos 52--Jeff Fouchey hit a 16-foot jump shot with three seconds remaining to lift the Yellowjackets (17-8) at Los Alamitos (16-9).

Fouchey finished with 16 points and Ray Hughes scored 10 for Oxnard.

I-A

Valencia 81, Don Lugo 50--Jerrohn Jordan had 37 points and 12 rebounds for Valencia (21-6), which won its first playoff game in school history. Fabian Leon had 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Vikings.

Pasadena 81, Quartz Hill 67--Shawn Lett scored 18 points and Russell Garcia added 17 points for Quartz Hill (15-12), who were outscored, 30-18, in the first quarter in a game at Pasadena (17-11).

Quartz Hill’s Jason Tomlin added 14 points.

II-AA

California 66, Antelope Valley 50--The Antelopes had their season ended in Whittier.

II-A

Burroughs 68, Temple City 63--After Josh Johnson of Temple City scored 18 of his 28 points and made six three-point baskets in the first quarter, Burroughs Coach Art Sullivan assigned Glenn Adriatico to guard Johnson.

Adriatico came through by holding Johnson scoreless in the second quarter, and the host Indians (18-9) used a 33-12 run to take a 43-32 halftime lead.

Kevin Crose and Jeremy Cartee each had 19 points and seven rebounds for Burroughs, and Adriatico had 10 points and five assists.

Moorpark 57, Culver City 47--Keith Donahue and Kevin Lawrence each scored 18 points, and host Moorpark (22-6) set a school record for victories in a season.

Byron Burnett had nine points and 13 rebounds for Moorpark, which won 21 games in 1982.

III-AA

La Canada 73, Pioneer 64--Matt Moore scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter for host La Canada (23-5).

Ian Sullivan scored 23 points, and Tim Chung had nine points and seven assists for La Canada.

III-A

Cabrillo 86, Harvard-Westlake 79--The visiting Wolverines lost a postseason game for the first time in three seasons. Harvard-Westlake (19-8) had won the last two Division III state championships.

Bishop Montgomery 80, St. Francis 58--Tony Booker had 26 points for host Bishop Montgomery (20-6).

Richard Fields and Derek La Velle each scored 18 points for St. Francis (11-13).

IV-AA

LaSalle 54, Crespi 52--Aki Aquino made a game-winning layup with six seconds to play at LaSalle.

Crespi (12-14), which trailed most of the game, pulled even with 34 seconds to play on a 15-jump shot Blake Tibbetts.

Duarte 79, Oak Park 61--John Murphy scored 22 points for Oak Park (14-10) at Duarte.

V-AA

Montclair Prep 87, Cate 19--Rocky Steryo made 10 of 14 shots, including seven three-point baskets, and finished with 29 points for host Montclair Prep (24-3).

Santa Clara 73, Ribet Academy 62--B.J. Ward scored 26 points and Ryan McGill added 20 for host Santa Clara (11-12).
