Chaminade Stands Firm in Mud

Chaminade’s quest for a second consecutive Southern Section Division III girls’ soccer title continued on course Wednesday despite a bog of a field and determined opposition from Calabasas in a second-round game at Calabasas.

Chaminade prevailed, 3-1, after holding a 2-0 halftime advantage. The Eagles (24-2-1) will host Mission League rival Notre Dame in a quarterfinal match Friday. Chaminade beat the Knights, 4-1 and 2-1, during the regular season.

Michelle French scored her 12th goal in the second minute and Carlie Stokes scored her 12th goal in the 30th minute with an assist from Amy Watts.

Calabasas (12-4-2) scored with 12 minutes to play on Brooke Niles’ 25-yard direct kick.

Chaminade’s Kerrie Clavadetscher closed out the scoring 10 minutes later with her sixth goal, also on an assist from Watts.

In other Southern Section second-round games:

Buena 1, Santa Barbara 0--Natalie Sanderson scored in the 17th minute for the Bulldogs (19-2-4) in a Division II match of Channel League co-champions at Buena.

The Bulldogs will play at Mater Dei on Friday in a quarterfinal.

Simi Valley 2, Arcadia 1--The Pioneers (19-5-1) converted four of five penalty kicks to defeat the Pacific League champion Apaches (16-7-1) in a Division I game at Arcadia.

Simi Valley won the shootout, 4-2, on goals from Lori Tande, Jill Clarkson, Cara DeStefano and Sara Jenke.

Valorie Annunzita tied the game for Simi Valley with a goal eight minutes into the second half. The Pioneers will face Peninsula in a Friday quarterfinal at a site to be determined by a coin flip.

St. Bonaventure 2, Thacher 0--Erin Croasmun and Gina Scarlet scored for the Seraphs (22-2-1) in a Division IV game at Thacher.

St. Bonaventure hosts Tri-Valley League rival Oak Park on Friday in a quarterfinal.

In City Section playoff games:

Granada Hills 4, Birmingham 2--Sabrina Love had two goals and two assists for the Highlanders (11-8) in a 4-A Division quarterfinal at Granada Hills.

Krissy Oakes of Birmingham (14-3-1) broke her left arm eight minutes into the game. Granada Hills plays Tuesday against Chatsworth or Grant.

Cleveland 4, North Hollywood 3--Angela Veliz scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute on an assist from Brynne Blumstein and the Cavaliers (16-5-1), top-seeded in the 3-A Division, advanced to play Manual Arts on Friday in a quarterfinal.

Kennedy 4, Banning 0--The Golden Cougars (13-6-1), seeded second in 3-A, advanced to host 10th-seeded Poly in a quarterfinal Friday.

Monroe 6, Marshall 1--Liz Nemeth and Haydee Lopez each scored two goals for the Vikings (15-3) in a 3-A first-round game at Monroe.

Monroe, seeded fourth, will host fifth-seeded Garfield in a quarterfinal Friday.
