* Sonora vs. Compton Dominguez, Compton College, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Though Sonora Coach Mike Murphy isn’t happy about meeting Dominguez so early in the playoffs, this Division II-A game figures to be a barn-burner because each team plays a fast-paced style. Dominguez, the defending state Division II champion, features guard Tayshaun Prince and 7-foot freshman center Tyson Chandler. Sonora is led by guard Jeffrey Berokoff, who averages 24.3 points.

* Capistrano Valley vs. Long Beach Poly, Long Beach College, 7:30 p.m. Friday: This Division I-AA quarterfinal is rife with family ties and coincidence. Second-seeded Poly may be without standout center Ricky Anderson, who injured an ankle in the Jackrabbits’ 77-72 victory over Lawndale Leuzinger. His father is Gary Anderson, a former Long Beach College forward and now the Vikings’ basketball coach. Capistrano Valley Coach Brian Mulligan’s father, Bill, won Southern Section large-school titles as Poly’s coach in 1960 and ’64. Bill Mulligan won three state titles at Riverside College, where he coached against Long Beach College and Gary Anderson in 1969 and 1970.
