Bolsa Grande’s Nguyen Scores 40 in Victory

Duc Nguyen scored 40 points to help Bolsa Grande break open a close game in the fourth quarter and defeat host Rancho Alamitos, 82-70, in a Garden Grove League boys’ basketball game Monday.

Nguyen, who had six three-pointers, made seven of nine free throws in the fourth quarter for Bolsa Grande, which trailed, 29-17, in the second quarter.

Jon James scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Matadors (13-4, 3-0 in league).

Rancho Alamitos is 2-14, 1-2.

Pacifica 75, Los Amigos 51--Jeff Swan scored 20 points for visiting Pacifica (12-4, 2-0).

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Pacifica 53, Los Amigos 37--Jaymee Pendergast scored 21 points for Pacifica (8-7, 2-0).

Rancho Alamitos 42, Bolsa Grande 37--Eurydyka Ciejka had 21 points and 17 rebounds for Rancho Alamitos (8-8, 2-1).

In Golden West League boys’ soccer:

No. 9 Santa Ana 2, Tustin 1--Hector Candelas scored on a header in the 70th minute for host Santa Ana (8-3, 1-0).

In the South Coast League:

No. 10 San Clemente 1, Dana Hills 0--Bryce Sebastian scored midway through the first half for host San Clemente (9-2-4, 1-0).

Trabuco Hills 3, Mission Viejo 1--Injury-time goals by Nick Johnson and Andrew Mizell broke a 1-1 tie for visiting Trabuco Hills (1-0 in league).

In Academy League girls’ soccer:

St. Margaret’s 7, Connelly 0--Kristen Gottwald scored three goals for St. Margaret’s (3-2, 2-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 5, Santiago 1--Erin Griswold scored three first-half goals for host Garden Grove (7-0-1, 2-0).

Pacifica 10, Los Amigos 0--Diana DeAugustine scored three goals and her sister, Ann, had two goals and three assists for host Pacifica (12-4, 2-0).

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Cypress 6, El Modena 5--Erin Hoagland scored the game-winning goal with 46 seconds remaining for Cypress (8-8).

Esperanza 12, El Dorado 8--Andrea Griffith scored five goals for host Esperanza (6-4).
