Hanson Leads Irvine Past El Toro in Girls’ Water Polo

Alexis Hanson scored with 1 minute 21 seconds left in overtime and top-ranked Irvine went on to beat El Toro, 8-7, in the title game of the Irvine girls’ water polo tournament Saturday.

Irvine (13-2) led by a goal late in the fourth quarter when El Toro’s Amy Cessna scored to tie it, 7-7, with 26 seconds left in regulation.

Nicole Huszcz scored three goals for Irvine.

The Vaqueros defeated University, 8-4, in the semifinals. Erin Lezak, named the tournament MVP, scored three goals for Irvine.

El Toro, ranked eighth, reached the final with a 5-2 victory over Santa Margarita. Christin Miller scored three goals.

In other tournament games:

University 8, Santa Margarita 3--Erin Hayes scored two goals as University won the third-place game. Goalie Amy Hilts had nine saves for the Trojans.

Stacey Sava had 10 saves for Santa Margarita.

Irvine (B) 4, Redlands 3 (OT)--Julie Fliegler scored with two seconds left in overtime for Irvine.

In the Long Beach Wilson girls’ water polo tournament:

Santa Barbara 3, No. 5 Marina 2 (OT)--Marina’s Cara Chlebicki sent the game into overtime with a goal late in the fourth quarter of the title game. Rebecca Miller scored four goals and had three assists in a 7-6 semifinal victory over Rosary. Marina is 12-4.

No. 4 Los Alamitos 6, No. 3 Rosary 2--Jackie Frank had 17 saves and held Rosary (13-2) to two goals as Los Alamitos won the third-place game. Amy Valois scored three goals for the Griffins (11-4).

Los Alamitos lost in the semifinals to Santa Barbara, 11-4.

The Griffins’ Kenzi Hales scored twice against Santa Barbara.

In the Coronado girls’ water polo tournament:

Fallbrook 5, Foothill 4 (OT)--Teresa Gorbett scored three goals and Jamie Belcore made eight saves for Foothill (9-5).

In an earlier game, Daylene Coberly scored five goals in an 11-3 victory over Del Mar Torrey Pines (4-10). Janelle Coberly was named defensive player of the tournament with 24 steals in four games for the Knights.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Servite 63, Esperanza 44--Steve Shea, 13 of 20 from the free-throw line, had 21 points for Servite (15-4). The Friars made 27 of 41 free throws.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

No. 10 Troy 77, Rosary 74--Freshman Veronica Johns made four of four free throws in the final 15 seconds, finishing with 24 points for Troy (18-2). Heidi Hardeman had 23 points for the Warriors. Maggie Barnett scored 28 points and Romina Bollini had 20 for Rosary (11-9).

In the San Clemente Rotary wrestling tournament:

Loara wins team title--Jordan Bullenbacher (105), Tony Aparicio (127), Luis Aparicio (132) and Alex Tran (137) won their weight classes for Loara. Dan Melindez (217) and Dave Haunga (heavyweight) won for Santiago, which finished third.
