A California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a motorist Wednesday night in East Los Angeles after a chase that ended with the man driving his car onto the officer’s patrol car, the CHP said.

Sgt. Ernie Garcia said the officer gave chase after seeing a car being driven recklessly on Atlantic Boulevard near the 710 Freeway.

A license plate check revealed that the car was stolen, Garcia said.

The chase ended a few blocks away at the intersection of East 4th Street and South Mednik Avenue, with the stolen car resting in front of the patrol car.

Then, Garcia said, the stolen car backed up, landing on top of the patrol car. “Somehow they became entangled,” Garcia said.

According to a spokesman at the scene, the officer got out of the patrol car and the motorist tried to put his car in drive. Fearing for his life, the officer fired several rounds, killing the motorist about 7:50p.m., the CHP said.

Further details were not available late Wednesday.
