WATER POLO Peter Hudnut of Harvard-Westlake has been selected to the high school All-American team by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Assn., and three other Wolverines were chosen to the squad.

Brendan Connolly was selected to the fourth team and Phil Spataru made the fifth team. Jeanine Jackson was chosen to the girls’ third team.

The Wolverine boys’ team recently swept a national champion 17-and-under team from Japan in a three-game series in Studio City.

VOLLEYBALL

Gail Castro, a former Olympian who played at Crescenta Valley High and Valley College, won two of her three matches Friday in pool play at the Best of the Beach tournament in Huntington Beach but did not advance.

Deb Richardson and Elaine Youngs scored the most points to win their respective four-player pools and join six higher-seeded players, who received byes, in two more four-player pools today. Each player has three matches today with a different partner. Two players from each pool advance to the final round on Sunday.

SOCCER

Coach Marwan Ass’ad of Cal State Northridge will conduct five one-week camps for youngsters 5-14 beginning Monday at Mason Park in Chatsworth. Cost is $150. Information: (818) 341-2216.

SOFTBALL

The Simi Valley Rampage, an ASA 16-and-under fast-pitch team, defeated the New York Panthers, 3-0, in the championship of a national qualifying tournament Sunday in New Jersey.

The Rampage includes players from Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Agoura and Palmdale.

The Rampage qualified for the ASA national tournament, Aug. 3-9 in Novi, Mich.

The Moorpark girls’ softball 14-and-under all-star team defeated Carlsbad, 4-1, in the first round of ASA state tournament Friday in Garden Grove.

In another first-round game, the West Valley girls’ softball team edged Artesia, 5-4, as Merrille Garcia and Jessica Kirby each had three hits.
