DIVISION II-A

Taller, bigger and quicker, third-seeded Compton Dominguez ran to a 41-32 Southern Section Division II-A championship victory over fourth-seeded Glendora St. Lucy’s at the Pyramid.

Dominguez used its pressing defense to hound the Regents, who made only three of 15 first-half shots, didn’t break double figures for 15 minutes 40 seconds and fell behind at halftime, 24-11.

Though a six-point run to open the third quarter cut the deficit to nine points, St. Lucy’s got no closer.

Ashley Shaketha (15 points) and Myangela Turner (nine points, eight rebounds) led the Dons (27-2).

Kate Plante scored 11 and Erin Epperson 10 for St. Lucy’s (21-10).

DIVISION III-A

Top-seeded Harvard-Westlake (26-5) took advantage of two late technical fouls and made six free throws in the final 70 seconds of a 45-41 victory over Morningside (26-6) in the Division III-A championship game.

The third-seeded Monarchs were called for having an incorrect number listed in their scorebook and for a fan who threw a cup of ice onto the court in protest of the first technical.

“They completely fell apart,” said Harvard-Westlake guard Brooke Porter, who scored 17 points. “It was their players, their coach, their fans.”

The Wolverine victory ended Morningside’s 17-game winning streak and avenged a 54-49 loss to the Monarchs on Jan. 2 in the Ayala tournament.

DIVISION V-A

Top-seeded Santa Maria Valley Christian overcame early jitters to defeat Apple Valley Christian, 47-30, and claim the Southern Section Division V-A girls’ championship.
