Brethren Christian (20-10) vs. Corcoran (27-5)
8:15 TONIGHT WARRIOR CENTER
Corcoran, the Central Section champion, advanced to the second round of the Southern California playoffs with a 69-64 victory at home over Calvary Chapel. Calvary shared the Olympic League title and Brethren Christian finished third in the league. But this game may be the last one Brethren plays at the Warrior Center, and that should provide an emotional lift. Brethren Christian must take advantage of its experience; Corcoran starts a freshman, sophomore, two juniors and a senior. Brethren starts three seniors, a junior and a sophomore. Few players have had as big an impact over the past two games as Cindy Oparah (19.9 points, 11.7 rebounds) of the Warriors. She scored 22 in Brethren’s 44-37 overtime upset of Cerritos Valley Christian in the Southern Section Division IV-A finals, and followed on Tuesday with 30 points in a 50-39 victory over Woodlake. Corcoran is led by Veranda James (14 points, 7.5 rebounds), a 6-1 sophomore center; 5-11 forward Charessa Butler (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Perla Haro (10.6 points), a 5-7 junior guard. Oparah must get a good complementary effort from the person who provides Brethren with a real size advantage, Rachael MacDonald (17.6 points), a 6-3 senior center who is going to Brown.
