Tustin Beats Servite This Time Around

Tustin avenged a five-game loss to Servite by sweeping the rematch, 16-14, 15-10, 15-13, in a Golden West League boys’ volleyball match Monday at Tustin High.

Daniel Dizon had 27 kills and Daniel Vander Roest added 21 for the host Tillers (9-4, 7-2 in league), ranked 10th in the Southern Section Division II.

Eric Barnes had 16 kills for Servite (13-2, 8-1), ranked sixth in Division II.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Garden Grove 2--Chris Smith had 19 kills and Anh Nguyen added 15 for host La Quinta (6-6, 6-10), which won, 14-16, 16-14, 15-13, 14-16, 15-19. Garden Grove is 4-11, 4-7.

In a nonleague match:

No. 2 Laguna Beach 3, Huntington Beach 1--Shaun MacGillivray had 52 assists and 13 digs and Tyler Reynard had 17 kills for host Laguna Beach (13-2), which won, 9-15, 15-7, 15-12, 15-6.

In Olympic League golf:

Orange Lutheran 187, Whittier Christian 193--Jimmy Campo shot a one-under 34 at Willowick for host Orange Lutheran (13-5, 10-4), which finished in a four-way tie with Cerritos Whitney, Cerritos Valley Christian and Brethren Christian for the league title.

The teams will have a four-way playoff as part of the league individual finals today at Willowick.

In the Sunset League finals:

Esperanza’s Six wins--Brian Six shot a four-under 68 on Green River’s Orange Course and a one-over 72 on the Riverside Course to finish at three-under 140. Fountain Valley’s Jeff Greenfield shot par 143 to finish second.

In nonleague softball:

Rosary 1, Lakewood St. Joseph’s 0 (9 innings)--Erin Hogan singled home Theresa Cronin, who had tripled with two outs, with the winning run for host Rosary (18-6). Mallory Anderson struck out seven and pitched a five-hitter for the Royals.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Palos Verdes Peninsula 9, No. 1 Corona del Mar 9 (Peninsula wins on games, 81-79)--Corona del Mar (15-1), the top-ranked team in Division I, lost its first match of the season to second-ranked Peninsula (15-0). Sameer Chopra swept in singles for the visiting Sea Kings 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

In the Century League:

Foothill 9, Villa Park 9 (Foothill wins on games, 84-78)--Scott Wilson and Matt Zuckerman won their final doubles set, 6-4, to give the host Knights (11-6, 8-1) their ninth point and the match.

In the Sunset League:

No. 8 Esperanza 18, Fountain Valley 6--Pat O’Donnell won, 6-4, 6-3, for host Esperanza (13-7, 4-6). Fountain Valley is 11-8, 6-4.
