Lion-ized: Shortstop Tommy Perez of Burroughs High has committed to Loyola Marymount. He was twice selected to the All-Foothill League team.

JC honors: Pitcher Barry Zito of Pierce College, shortstop Fred Sanchez of Glendale and designated hitter John Campanella of Glendale have been selected to the All-Southern California JC team.

Local connections: Fresno State pitcher Jeff Weaver has been selected to the American Baseball Coaches Assn. All-West Region team. Weaver, a junior right-hander, is from Simi Valley High.

Outfielder Terrmel Sledge of Long Beach State and pitcher Benito Flores of Cal State Fullerton were second-team selections. Both are transfers from Cal State Northridge. Sledge, a junior, attended Kennedy High. Flores, a left-hander, is a senior.

BASKETBALL

Michael hired: Dan Michael has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Lancaster High.

Michael, who began the 1997-98 season as the Eagles’ junior varsity coach, became the interim varsity coach at midseason after Nathan Gilmore was fired.

Best in West: Michelle Greco of Crescenta Valley High has been chosen to play on the U.S. women’s team that will compete in the Under-19 World Championships, July 21-26, in Shreveport, La.

Greco, The Times’ Southland high school player of the year the last two seasons, is the only player on the team from a high school west of Austin, Texas. She will play next season for UCLA.

GOLF

Kohut second: Westlake High golfer J.T. Kohut finished second on Monday at the American Junior Golf Assn. tournament at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Kohut finished at two-under-par after shooting 71-74-69.

TRACK AND FIELD

Arzu picks USC: Rod Arzu of Notre Dame High, the runner-up in the boys’ 400 meters in the Southern Section Division III championships, will attend USC in the fall and attempt to walk on to the Trojan track team.

AUTO RACING

Winning tandem: M.K. Kanke of Granada Hills and Rod Johnson of Canyon Country won main events Saturday at the Memorial Day 100 at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield.

Kanke can become the third driver in the history of the Featherlite Southwest Tour to win three consecutive races with a victory Saturday at Colorado National Speedway in Scotts Valley, Calif. Johnson won his fifth Grand American Modifieds main event in as many races and leads the points standings.

SURFING

Clean slate: Dylan Slater of Ventura, a 15-year-old sophomore, will be competing this weekend in the Western Regional championships of the National Scholastic Surfing Federation in Huntington Beach. Slater won the open juniors Southwest championship for the 13-15 age group. He’s one of the favorites to win the national championship June 21-27 in San Clemente.

GYMNASTICS

Floored: Theresa O’Gara, 16, of Oak Park, won a Level 9 Western Regional championship in the floor exercise at a competition in Austin, Texas, earlier this month.

MISCELLANY

It’s good: Jim O’Brien, who kicked a game-winning, 32-yard field goal for the Baltimore Colts in the final seconds of Super Bowl V, will be the featured speaker at the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet, June 6, at the Doubletree Hotel in Ventura.

Top athletes from the county will be honored in a ceremony.
