Canoles’ Catch Completes Chaminade Comeback, 21-14

Chris Canoles caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Lyle Everett with 1:04 to play Friday night, lifting Chaminade High to a 21-14 victory over Santa Fe in the first round of the Southern Section Division VII playoffs at Chaminade.

The Eagles (7-4) drove 70 yards in four plays to erase a 14-13 deficit. The winning drive was highlighted by a 37-yard pass play from Everett to Nick Lawson for a first down at the Santa Fe 33-yard line. Lawson’s eight-yard reception from Everett moved the ball to the 25.

Sean Hensley played quarterback on the two-point conversion, passing to Steve Racius for the game’s final points.

Chaminade managed only 11 yards in 12 plays in the first half and trailed, 7-0, at halftime.

The Eagles rallied to tie the score, 7-7, with 4:19 left in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Lee Grassini, who finished with 105 yards rushing in 19 carries despite suffering a thumb injury in the second quarter.

One play after the kickoff, Chaminade recovered Sergio Silva’s fumble at the Santa Fe one-yard line, and Tyler Theobald’s scoring run on the next play put the Eagles ahead, 13-7.

Everett completed seven of 19 passes for 103 yards, with two interceptions. Canoles had three catches for 50 yards.

Santa Fe (4-7) committed six turnovers.
