Kung is tied for seventh after shooting a two-over-par 74 in the first round of the AJGA Junior Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Kung trails leader Miriam Nagl of Germany by six shots. Kim shot 70, Kouwabunpat 78, Rho 80 and Umeck 84.

In the boys’ competition, Nicholas Bollini of Yorba Linda trails leader Brent Wanner of South Chatham, Mass., by seven shots after a 74, Irvine’s Mike Lavery had 75, Brian Sinay and Ron Won, both of Irvine, shot 76s.

After two rounds of stroke-play qualifying, 32 boys and 32 girls will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday.

William Lou, who took over a dormant Garden Grove girls’ tennis program and led the Argonauts to four consecutive league titles, has stepped down after six years. Lou, 42, said he is leaving coaching to spend more time with his family.

“I have two daughters; I want to coach the Lou team now,” said Lou, who told his players before the season that he would retire.

In six years, Lou’s teams went 77-35. He led the Argonauts to their best season this year--17-3 record and a quarterfinal appearance in the Southern Section Division III playoffs.

“What I’ll miss most is seeing the growth of the student-athletes,” Lou said. “Hardly anybody plays tennis before they come to Garden Grove. So once we get them, it’s a year-long process.”
