Former La Quinta baseball player Gerald Laird will have his uniform number (9) retired Friday morning in a ceremony at the school.

Laird, who was selected Times Orange County player of the year in 1997 and ‘98, was the first county player with a single-season batting average over .600. He batted .630 last spring.

Laird was drafted in the second round of baseball’s June amateur draft by the Oakland Athletics, but he did not sign and currently attends Cypress College.
