Foothill Wins; Faces No. 1 Water Polo Team

Foothill, ranked third in the county in boys’ water polo, held off second-ranked San Clemente to win, 8-6, in a quarterfinal match of the South Coast tournament at El Dorado Friday.

Senior Matt Ellis and junior Mike McClay each scored three goals for Foothill (5-1). Pat Logan and Eitan Goldstein scored the other two goals for the Knights. Beau Schuster had three goals for San Clemente (4-2).

Foothill plays Long Beach Wilson, top ranked in Division I, at 9:50 a.m. today in a semifinal game at Newport Harbor High.

In other quarterfinal games:

No. 4 El Toro 8, No. 5 Villa Park 7--Andy Terpstra scored with 1 minute 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give El Toro the quarterfinal victory. Richie Schwanbeck’s goal in the fourth tied the score, 7-7, for El Toro (8-2).

Doug Brown made 12 saves for the Chargers, four of them in the final quarter. Nick Pacelli scored three goals for Villa Park (7-3). Jeff Lloyd and Trevor McMunn each scored two goals for El Toro, which will play Newport Harbor at Newport Harbor today at 11 a.m. in the semifinals.

No. 1 Newport Harbor 10, No. 7 Los Alamitos 2--Kevin Becker scored three goals for Newport Harbor (4-1).

Long Beach Wilson 13, No. 6 Servite 4--Tony Azevedo scored four goals for Wilson, which led, 9-2, after two quarters. Phillip Garcia had two goals and Eric Woolery and Jarrod Cruzat each had one for visiting Servite (4-1).

In consolation games:

University 5, No. 9 Capistrano Valley 4 (OT)--John Drachman took a pass from Kenny Nakahara to score the winner in sudden death. Evan Slavik had seven saves for University (9-2).

In the Rowland boys’ water polo tournament:

Upland 3, Fountain Valley 2 (OT)--Steven Bolhman scored the winning goal from two meters with 31 seconds remaining in overtime. Fountain Valley’s Brandon Dotts tied the score, 2-2, with two minutes left in regulation. Kiff Crandall’s goal in the third quarter tied the score, 1-1, for visiting Fountain Valley (2-3).

In nonleague tennis:

Pacifica 11, Calvary Chapel 7--Pacifica’s No. 1 singles player Rashi Keswarani was the only Mariner to sweep her sets for host Pacifica (6-0).
