Jensen Sweeps in Singles to Lead Corona del Mar

Corona del Mar High’s Christian Jensen and Woodbridge’s David Lingman continued in opposite directions Thursday.

Jensen swept his singles sets to lead the top-ranked Sea Kings to an 11-7 victory over No. 3 Woodbridge in a Sea View League boys’ tennis match at Corona del Mar.

“That’s the best tennis I played all year,” said Jensen, who reached the quarterfinals of the Ojai boys’ interscholastic doubles last weekend. “My serve was on today, everything was clicking. I mixed up my shots pretty well and kept the ball in play, and played the big points pretty well.”

Lingman, who led the Warriors to consecutive Division I team titles in 1996 and 1997 before sitting out last season to work with his private coach, won a hard-fought set, 6-4, against Corona del Mar’s No. 1 player, Parker Collins, but then dropped the next two, including a 6-2 loss to Jensen, his first loss against the Corona del Mar senior.

“I haven’t been playing too well and I kind of took [Jensen] too lightly,” said Lingman, who has committed to Harvard. “Everything is just a little off, or just missing.”

The Warriors, who lost to the Sea Kings, 17-1, in a league match earlier this season, were even with Corona del Mar after the first round. Lingman finished off Collins with a hard forehand and Jonathan Sheridan and Brett Van Linge battled to a 7-6 (7-1) victory over Corona del Mar’s top doubles team of Brian Morton and Randy Myers.

But the Warriors (13-4, 7-2) could only produce one point in the second round, a 6-3 victory by Sheridan and Van Linge, who were the only Woodbridge players to sweep.

Corona del Mar improved to 16-0, 9-0.
