Nick Weiss -- Calabasas, Junior

* Recognized as one of the best players in the area before the season, Weiss proved it by reaching the Southern Section final, where he suffered his only loss to Sheng. A part-time player for the Coyotes, Weiss was 33-1 in sets and won the Frontier League singles title.

Quinn Borchard -- Rio Mesa, Junior

* Borchard went 40-2 and was unbeaten in Pacific View League sets. He won the league singles title and reached the round of 16 in the Southern Section tournament before defaulting because of a sore knee. He defeated Sheng in a nonleague match and led Rio Mesa to an 18-2 record and the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs.

Prakash Amritraj -- Sophomore, Harvard-Westlake

* Missed the first two weeks of the season while on a tennis-playing tour of Asia, but after that was the No. 1 player on the deepest team in the region. Was 28-10 in sets to lead the Wolverines to a 21-3 record and their third consecutive Southern Section Division II title.

DOUBLES

Willie Mullin, Senior, and Andrew Lieu, Freshman -- Thousand Oaks

* Lieu played No. 2 singles behind Sheng for most of the season, but teamed with Mullin--who played singles and doubles during the regular season--in the Southern Section doubles tournament. They reached the semifinals before losing to top-seeded Dave Gleiberman and Goh Fukugaki of Peninsula.

Brad Steinberg, Freshman, and Brian Mintz, Junior -- Granada Hills

* Steinberg and Mintz (26-4) played No. 2 doubles and enjoyed a successful postseason run for Granada Hills, City Championship runner-up to Palisades. They reached the doubles final in the City Section tournament before losing to Blake Baumgarten and Peter Shirley of Palisades. Helped the Highlanders to a 14-2 record and the co-championship of the Northwest Valley Conference.

SECOND TEAM / SINGLES

Jesse Ferlianto -- Hart, Freshman

* Won the Foothill League singles title and went 51-6 in sets to help Hart, the league’s second-place finisher behind Burbank, go 16-3 and reach the second round of the Division II playoffs.

Joey Edelberg -- Oak Park, Senior

* Won the Tri-Valley League singles title for the third consecutive season and went to 54-2 in sets while leading the Eagles to the Division V quarterfinals, their best postseason showing. After reaching the round of 16 in the Southern Section tournament the previous two years, Edelberg ran into Sheng and fell in the round of 32 this season.

Adam Zunder -- Campbell Hall, Junior

* His team’s No. 1 player for three seasons, the left-handed Zunder went 65-4 in sets and led Campbell Hall to a 17-7 record and the semifinals of the Division V playoffs even though the Vikings lost six of nine players from 1998.

DOUBLES

Andrew Davidson, Senior, and Todd Castagna, Senior -- Hart

* The Indians’ No. 1 team went 51-3 and captured doubles titles in the Palmdale and Valencia tournaments.

Eugene Shin, Junior, and Drew Simmons, Senior -- Burbank

* Upset Davidson and Castagna to win the Foothill League doubles title and advanced to the round of 32 in the Southern Section tournament. Helped Burbank to its 12th consecutive Foothill title.
