No. 5 El Toro Knocks Off No. 3 Foothill

Megan Smietana homered to lead off the fifth as No. 5 El Toro defeated No. 3 Foothill, 1-0, in the Fountain Valley softball tournament.

Susan Churchwell struck out nine and walked one, giving up three hits. The Chargers (6-2) beat La Jolla Scripps Ranch, 2-0, in the first round. Churchwell struck out eight and went two for four with an RBI.

In Golden West League baseball:

No. 4 Servite 4, Tustin 2--Mike Irwin had two doubles and two RBIs and pitcher Joe Schaefer gave up one run and struck out four for host Servite (7-1, 3-0).

In Sunset League baseball:

Edison 8, No. 2 Esperanza 2--Tony Cappuccilli and Bryce Popoff each hit two home runs to lead host Edison (7-3, 2-1). Dale Thayer struck out six and walked one, giving up seven hits in the complete game. In nonleague baseball:

El Toro 9-15, University 6-11--El Toro’s Jose Lopez went eight for eight with three intentional walks, five RBIs and two stolen bases in the doubleheader.

In the Azusa Pacific track and field invitational:

Escobar sets record--Villa Park’s Augie Escobar finished the 3,200 in 9:19.6 to take first and set a meet record.

In the Fullerton city track and field championships:

Troy 77, Sunny Hills 42, Fullerton 23--Sunny Hills’ Joel Evans won the 300-meter hurdles in 40.5 seconds, a meet record. The former record of 42.01 was set by Irfan Kathiriya of Sunny Hills in 1993.

In the La Puente Bishop Amat relays:

Herrera wins--Loara’s Jose Herrera won the 3,200 in 9 minutes 18.17 seconds at Mt. San Antonio College. He also ran the 1,600-meter anchor leg of the distance medley relay in 4:18.6 to help Loara take second.
