Quartz Hill, Chaminade Receive No. 1 Seedings

The top two teams from the region received No. 1 seedings when the Southern Section softball playoff pairings were announced on Monday.

Quartz Hill, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, gained the top spot in Division I and will host the winner of a wild-card game between Glendora and Etiwanda in the first round on Friday.

All wild-card games are scheduled for Wednesday.

Golden League champion Quartz Hill (24-1), which won the Division II championship last season, has a region-high 24-game winning streak.

Chaminade (20-6-1), ranked No. 2 in the region, is the top-seeded team in Division IV.

The Mission League champions, who have won 16 consecutive games, will host Immaculate Heart on Friday.

Newbury Park in Division III and La Reina in Division V received No. 4 seedings.

Defending Division VI champion Cornerstone Christian was seeded No. 3 and has a first-round bye.

No fourth-place teams were admitted into the Division I bracket, which spelled the end of the season for Simi Valley (16-10) of the Marmonte League.

Of the 38 area teams to reach the playoffs, Division II Hart and Division V Paraclete got arguably the toughest draws.

Hart (21-5-1), co-champion of the Foothill League, lost a tie-breaker with co-champion Saugus (16-9-1) and advanced as a No. 2 team. The Indians, who host Santa Barbara on Friday, could face No. 2-seeded Cerritos in a quarterfinal.

Saugus will host Lancaster (7-11), the third-place team from the Golden League.

Paraclete (18-8), which was ranked No. 4 in its division, lost a probable seeding when it lost a coin toss to Alpha League co-champion L.A. Baptist. Paraclete must travel to Liberty League champion Providence for its opener.

There are some intriguing early matchups.

In Division I, Highland (17-10) hosts Valencia (12-14) in a wild-card game. In Division V, Santa Clara travels to St. Bonaventure for another wild card.

Westlake (18-9), third in the Marmonte League, plays at Calabasas (15-8-1) in a Division III opener, and Oak Park (19-4-1) hosts Harvard-Westlake (14-3) in a Division IV game.

Second-round games in Division I could include Quartz Hill against Marmonte League champion Thousand Oaks (20-8), and Pacific League champion Crescenta Valley (20-5) against traditional state power Santa Ana Mater Dei.
