David Contreras

Sport: Football
Season at a glance: Contreras rushed for 1,166 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, though Corey Neal was the Spartans’ featured back. This year, Contreras is the primary ballcarrier. He was held to 60 yards in an season-opening loss to powerful Notre Dame.
Week at a glance: The 5-foot-6, 175-pound Contreras rushed for 302 yards and two touchdowns in 30 carries in a 28-21 victory over Antelope Valley, which had defeated Sylmar three years in a row. Contreras also scored on a two-point conversion run and kicked two 31-yard field goals and two extra points to finish with 22 points.

Laura Jakosky
School: Agoura
Year: Junior
Sport: Cross-country
Season at a glance: Jakosky has won her first two races by large margins after winning the Southern Section Division II title last year and running 11:07.97 in the 3,200 meters in track.
Week at a glance: Jakosky won the large schools race of the Ojai Invitational at Lake Casitas with a time of 18:28 over the three-mile course. The time was slower than what she ran over the same course in the Ventura County championships last year, but it gave her a 28-second victory over junior Kelley Hess of Thousand Oaks.
