PREP ROUNDUP : Carlson, Irvine Win in 5 Games

Jody Carlson had 21 kills to help Irvine, ranked sixth in Orange County, top ninth-ranked Laguna Beach, 15-3, 14-16, 15-12, 4-15, 15-8, in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Irvine High.

Carlson also had six blocks, eight digs and four aces for the Vaqueros (3-0). Teammates Breanne Tillman, who had three digs, Jamie Witmer, who had six digs and three aces, and Tiffany Trgovac led Irvine’s defense, which keyed the victory in Game 5.

Lauralee Neptune had 21 kills for Laguna Beach (0-2).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

No. 5 Esperanza 3, Dana Hills 0--Toni Anderson had 29 assists for Esperanza (3-0), which won, 15-7, 15-0, 15-11.

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 3, Fountain Valley 0--Lisa Dooley had nine kills and Katey Ankeny added eight digs for the visiting Cougars (3-1), who won 15-5, 15-9, 15-6.

La Habra 3, Los Alamitos 2--Keao Burdine had 20 kills for host La Habra (1-2), which won, 1-15, 15-5, 15-9, 9-15, 15-6. Sara Kroneberger had 23 kills for Los Alamitos (4-2).

Laguna Hills 3, Costa Mesa 2--Kristin Brooks had 17 kills and Lauren Ruzicka had nine kills and six aces for Laguna Hills (2-1), which won, 15-4, 8-15, 15-17, 16-14, 15-12. Casey Petersen had 20 kills for Costa Mesa (3-2).

Troy 3, Western 2--Tatiana Kalache had 38 kills and 30 digs for Troy (1-2), which won, 12-15, 10-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-6. Elena Tovar added 31 digs for the Warriors.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 3, La Quinta 2--Liz Bedard had nine kills for host Garden Grove (1-3, 1-0), which won, 15-12, 13-15, 15-10, 11-15, 15-10. Becky Yong had 18 kills for La Quinta.

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 3, Saddleback 0--Elizabeth Smith had seven kills and seven aces for host Tustin (3-2, 2-0), which won, 15-11, 15-5, 16-14. Jannete Gonzalez had 10 kills for Saddleback (1-3, 0-2).

In nonleague girls’ golf:

No. 8 Woodbridge 223, No. 2 Santa Margarita 225--Woodbridge’s Channing Lovejoy and Megan Mulhaupt of Santa Margarita (2-2) shared medalist honors, each shooting a three-over-par 39 at Tijeras Creek in the second half of an 18-hole match. Woodbridge remains undefeated at 4-0.

Dana Hills 131, No. 9 Laguna Hills 146--Sophomore Carling Cho shot six-over 40 at Monarch Beach for Dana Hills (5-0).

Los Alamitos 136, Lakewood 142--Medalist Jamie Oliver made six pars and shot a one-over 37 for host Los Alamitos (4-0) at Skylinks.

Marina 137, Orange 186--Courtney Goebel shot a four-over 40, including two birdies and two pars, at Meadowlark for Marina (3-0).

In nonleague water polo:

No. 8 Los Alamitos 10, No. 9 Laguna Beach 4--Erik Geoffroy and Trevor Wawrzynski each scored three goals for host Los Alamitos (5-0). Geoffroy scored all of his goals in the first period to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead.

Laguna Beach is 2-1.

No. 10 Irvine 10, Fountain Valley 7--Mike Shapiro had three goals and seven steals for Irvine (5-1).

Long Beach Wilson 10, San Clemente 7--Albert Garcia had six goals and Zach Walter had 11 saves for Long Beach Wilson (1-1). San Clemente (1-1) is ranked sixth in the county.

Aliso Niguel 6, Dana Hills 3--Eric Teacher, James Cintas and Robert Seeley each scored fourth quarter goals for Aliso Niguel (4-3), which entered the final quarter tied, 3-3.

Laguna Hills 15, Western 9--Matt Henry and Ryan McMillan each scored three goals for host Laguna Hills (5-1). Western is 4-1.

Santa Ana 15, Downey Warren 6--Scott Bradfield scored nine goals, eight in the first half, for visiting Santa Ana (1-1), which led, 10-3, at halftime.
