Doubles Play Keys La Reina Victory

Erin Meister and Beth Hutchinson swept their doubles sets and the La Reina High girls’ tennis team beat visiting St. Bonaventure by games, 80-73, in Tuesday’s Tri-Valley League opener.

The teams tied 9-9 in sets, but the Regents (4-3, 1-0) were buoyed by singles players Kathryn Meister, Stephanie Matthews and Emily Lennox.

No. 1 Alyssa Halcomb of St. Bonaventure (5-2, 0-1) won two sets easily, 6-2, 6-2, but Matthews won valuable games for La Reina in a 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) loss to Halcomb.

Meister did not lose a game in two sets and Lennox’s 6-2 victory over Sydney Spink was crucial.

La Reina, which played a tough nonleague scheduled that included Pasadena Poly, Westlake and Chaminade, is ranked eighth in the Southern Section Division V poll.

Village Christian 12, Pasadena Marshall 6--The Crusaders were without their top two singles players and one of their top doubles players, but won the Sunshine League match at Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis in Glendale.

Theresa Johnson and Megan Greslie of Village Christian swept the No. 1 and 2 singles matches in the absence of teammates Jenna Crowley and Hana Turek.

Calabasas 11, Brentwood 7--The Coyotes (6-0) won a showdown of Southern Section powers at Calabasas.

San Fernando 5, Chatsworth 2--Gladys Preciado won, 8-1, at No. 1 singles for the host Tigers (3-0) at El Cariso Park in Sylmar.

Chatsworth is 0-3.

Burroughs 13, Hart 5--Dragana Ognenovska and Shania Zaidi recorded singles sweeps and Burroughs (5-0, 1-0) won its Foothill League opener.

Hart (4-2, 0-1) is defending league champion.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Louisville def. Calabasas, 15-1, 9-15, 15-7, 15-6--Junior outside hitter Megan O’Connell had 13 kills in 18 attempts with no errors for a .722 hitting percentage for the Royals (4-2) in a nonleague victory at Calabasas.

O’Connell also had seven digs and four aces.

Village Christian def. Campbell Hall, 15-2, 15-11, 15-9--Maria Abaca had 11 kills and the Crusaders (12-2) recorded their seventh consecutive victory in a nonleague match at Village Christian.

La Canada def. Hart, 15-9, 15-5, 15-4--Kelly Gaudino had 12 kills and Tracy Neumeier had 34 assists in a nonleague victory for the Spartans (6-0) at La Canada.

Camarillo def. Channel Islands, 15-6, 15-10, 15-5--Nicki Holt had 15 kills and four blocks for the Scorpions (3-2, 2-1) in a Pacific View League victory at Camarillo.

Oak Park def. Santa Clara, 8-15, 15-1, 15-8, 15-13--Allison Donald had 15 kills and 12 digs for the Eagles (2-5) in a nonleague victory at Santa Clara.

Quinn Brennan of La Reina had nine digs, five aces and 20 assists.

Alemany def. Crescenta Valley, 9-15, 15-8, 10-15, 15-13, 15-7--Coral Florian had 18 kills and 17 digs, and Gina Zambetti added 41 assists and 10 digs for the Indians (5-0) at Alemany.

Valencia def. Highland, 15-9, 14-16, 15-12, 15-3--Sara Foster had 15 kills and nine blocks for the Vikings (4-0) in a nonleague victory at Valencia.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Crescenta Valley 26, La Canada 31--Ryan Burnett of La Canada (5-3) clocked 16:39 over the three-mile course to win by more than a minute, but the Falcons had five of the next seven finishers to win a nonleague meet at Crescenta Valley Park.

Sean McKelvey of Crescenta Valley was second in 17:55 and teammate Christian Snyder was third in 18:20.

Jon Facer, La Canada’s No. 2 runner, missed his second consecutive meet while recovering from an infection caused by an ingrown toenail.

Notre Dame 26, St. Francis 29--Jeff Arnold clocked 15:06 on the 2.9-mile course at Griffith Park for St. Francis, but defending league champion Notre Dame (2-1, 2-1) had five of the top nine finishers even without Larry Pitkin, who missed the meet because of a sore hamstring.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

La Canada 15, Crescenta Valley (no score)--Christina Garnic clocked 20:45 over the three-mile course and the two-time defending state Division III champion Spartans (8-0) swept the top five places in a nonleague meet at Crescenta Valley Park.

MEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 1, Long Beach 0--Reserve Francisco Zavala scored on a header in the 75th minute of a nonconference game at Moorpark.
