Seventh-Ranked Troy Doubles Up to Beat No. 8 Sunny Hills in Tennis

Troy, ranked seventh in the county, took control of the Freeway League boys’ tennis race Monday, defeating No. 8 Sunny Hills, 10-8, at Troy.

Senior Ryan Young and freshman Edwin Mendoza swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, for Troy (19-0, 7-0). The Warriors clinched the victory when John Abella and Andrew Jan won the final doubles match, 6-4.

Joseph Kao swept his singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Sunny Hills (5-2 in league).

In nonleague boys’ golf:

No. 3 Huntington Beach 394, No. 4 Newport Harbor 398--Andy Andersen, Andy Leavelle and Kevin Noble each shot six-over-par 78 for Huntington Beach (14-1) at SeaCliff and Santa Ana Country Club. Kevin Olson of Newport Beach (13-2) was medalist with a 75.

At the Michelle Carew softball tournament:

Huntington Beach 5, Orange Lutheran 0--Ashley Perkins pitched a six-hitter and also doubled in a run for the Oilers (7-8) in the consolation final.

In Freeway League softball:

Fullerton 2, La Habra 0--Joanna Gray pitched a no-hitter for host Fullerton. Gray faced the minimum 21 batters, walking one in the sixth, then turning a come-backer into a double play.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

No. 4 Newport Harbor 98, No. 7 Corona del Mar 72--Aaron Peirsol won the 100 backstroke (53.27) and the 200 individual medley (2:02.31), and swam the first leg for the winning 200 medley relay (1:44.67) for visiting Newport Harbor (5-1).

Corona Del Mar (6-1) won just two of 11 events.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

No. 3 Newport Harbor 104, Corona del Mar 65--Sophomore Carly Geehr won the 200 (1:51.21) and 100 freestyles (54.02) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:57.33) and 400 freestyle relay (3:44l.15) for visiting Newport Harbor (4-2).

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, No. 10 Esperanza 0--Matt Wendt had 15 kills for the Oilers, who won 15-4, 15-11, 15-6.
