Santa Ana Advances to Soccer Final
Roberto Fuentes received a header from Elias Ferrel and knocked it into the net in the 41st minute to give Santa Ana a 1-0 victory over Fresno in the semifinal of the state men’s soccer championships Saturday in Lemoore.
The Dons (20-1-4), who outshot Fresno, 23-5, will face Orange Coast in the final today at 2 p.m. with a chance to become the first team to win three consecutive community college men’s soccer state championships.
Orange Coast defeated Santa Rosa on penalty kicks after being tied, 1-1, after 30 minutes of overtime.
In the women’s championships:
Santa Rosa 1, Cypress 0--Cypress’ 79-game winning streak was ended.
The winning streak had dated to the 1997 state championships when Cypress was defeated, 2-1, in the semifinals by Ohlone.
Cypress goalie Angela Orr had nine saves for the Chargers (22-1-1).
In the state women’s volleyball championships:
Golden West 3, Long Beach 1--By ending Long Beach’s 21-match winning streak in the semifinals of the double elimination tournament, the Rustlers (26-0) extended their winning streak to 91, including 27 in a row in the postseason, with the 15-10, 11-15, 15-12, 15-12 victory.
The Rustlers defeated Moorpark, 15-6, 15-3, 16-14 in a quarterfinal match earlier in the day.
Golden West’s opponent in today’s championship game will be determined in earlier matches.
In the state wrestling championships:
Cypress wrestler takes title--Jack Anaya of Cypress defeated Guy Horcasitas of Mt. San Antonio, 1-0, to win the 125-pound championship. Golden West was the top county finisher in the team event, placing seventh with 62.5 points, well behind first-place finisher Moorpark with 110 points.
