Fairfax’s Myinttun Wins the City Title

Moe Moe Myinttun of Fairfax High proved Monday that there is more to tennis than just hitting the ball hard. Accuracy counts just as much.

Myinttun’s consistency was the difference in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 upset over top-seeded Judith De Vera of Carson in the finals of the All-City Individual Tournament at Balboa Tennis Center in Encino.

Throughout the match the second-seeded Myinttun nullified her opponent’s power by keeping her groundstrokes within a foot of the baseline.

The players held serve until the 11th game of the first set, when Myinttun converted her third break point for a 6-5 lead. She promptly held serve to take the first set, despite hitting only four winners.

De Vera broke Myinttun for the first time in the fourth game of the second set to take a 3-1 lead. Myinttun broke back and held to level the set at 3-3, but De Vera broke again on a cross court forehand winner and won the second set with a service winner.

De Vera hit three consecutive shots long in the opening game of the third set, enabling Myinttun to hold serve. Two games later, De Vera hit an overhead long and Myinttun broke to take a 3-1 lead.

Top-seeded Shannon Slotnick and Caryn Linder won the doubles title for the second consecutive year, defeating Granada Hills teammates Andrea Blieden and Tracey Takeshita, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-2.
