Brea Olinda Gets Few Chances--and Only Goal

Share

Capistrano Valley got off most of the shots, but Brea Olinda made the one that counted as the Wildcats won a boys’ soccer game, 1-0, Wednesday at Capistrano Valley.

Brea Olinda was outshot, 17-5, and Capistrano Valley controlled the ball for most of the game. But Daniel Benigno, a Brea Olinda midfielder, got open on a breakaway midway through the first half and scored the game’s only goal.

“It was one of those things where we were in the right place at the right time,” said Matt Swindle, the Wildcat coach, “and we were able to get one through.”

Brea Olinda remained unbeaten in six games, and Capistrano Valley lost for the first time to drop to 8-1.

Mike Maynard finished with nine saves in goal for Brea Olinda, including seven in the first half.

“He really game up big for us today,” Swindle said. “He had some big saves near the end of the first half to help preserve the lead.”

The rest of the Brea defense was just as stingy, breaking up several Capistrano Valley scoring opportunities minutes before the half and minutes before the end of the game.

“They’re the kind of team that likes to put a lot of pressure on teams at the end of halves,” said Swindle of Capistrano Valley, “and I’m really proud of the way our defense weathered the storm.

Capistrano Valley will play in the Del Mar Torrey Pines tournament, and Brea Olinda will begin play in its own tournament Tuesday.
