Travis Beardslee

Saved his best performance for the Southern Section finals, finishing second in the Division IV race with the county’s second-best time of the day. Beardslee’s effort also earned him an individual spot in the state finals, where he finished 11th and dropped 37 seconds off his time from last season’s state finals. Beardslee also won a Pacific Coast League title for the Sea Kings.

Scott Brandos

EDISON SENIOR

Came into the season with lofty credentials, including the fastest time among county runners at the 1999 Mt. San Antonio College Invitational. He backed them up with a sixth-place finish in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships, a ninth-place finish at the Southern Section Division I finals--fifth-best among county runners--and a 27th-place finish at the state finals.

Tyler Kastorff

DANA HILLS SOPHOMORE

Came out of nowhere to place sixth in the Division I state finals, staying with the leaders through the first 2 1/2 miles and then out-kicking some of the state’s best to the finish line. Kastorff’s time of 15:32 was the best among Southern Section runners in Division I. Finished seventh a week earlier at the section finals, posting the third-best sophomore time ever (15:21) at Mt. SAC.

Steven Murray

SANTA MARGARITA SENIOR

Was the top junior in the county a year ago and was the top senior this season, thanks to his consistency and a strong finish at the Southern Section finals. He had the county’s fastest times at the Woodbridge, Central Park and Mt. SAC invitationals, defended his Serra League title, then won the Division II section title. Murray finished the season by placing seventh at state.

Steve Naughton

PACIFICA SENIOR

Qualified for the first team as a result of impressive late-season production. Naughton finished third at the Division III section finals, posting the seventh-fastest time among county runners, and earned a trip to the state finals. He also won the Garden Grove League title, breaking Dave King’s 1986 school record by six seconds and helping Pacifica spoil Santiago’s bid to win its 10th consecutive title.

Juan Robles

VALENCIA SOPHOMORE

Was consistent from start to finish this season. Robles placed fifth in the Division II race at the season-opening Bronco Invitational, then followed with a fourth-place finish in the sweepstakes race at the county championships and a victory in the Orange League finals. Robles helped Valencia gain the county’s only Division II state berth with a seventh-place finish at the section finals.

Raemon Rodriguez

MARINA JUNIOR

A transfer from Norwalk Glenn, Rodriguez quickly made himself known by winning the Sunny Hills Invitational in mid-September. He had the top time among county runners the next week at the Dana Hills Invitational, then took third in the sweepstakes race at the county championships. He also won Marina’s first individual league title in 11 years and finished 12th in the Division I section finals.

In her fourth season with the boys’ team, Hadley has built the Tigers into one of the county’s strongest programs. The Tigers advanced to the state finals for the first time in school history, were 10th at the county championships and seventh at the Division II section finals.

BOYS’ SECOND TEAM

MICHAEL HADDAN, Woodbridge, Fr.

Finished 18th at the section Division II finals. Won Division II race at county championships with seventh-best time of day.

RAUL LARA, Orange, Fr.

Finished 26th at section Division II finals. Won Century League title and finished behind Haddan at county championships.

DAVID NAPPER, Cypress, So.

Finished 15th in section Division II finals with 10th-best time among county runners. Finished first in Division III at county championships.

RICKY REHANEK, El Toro, Sr.

Finished seventh in sweepstakes race at county championships. Placed 31st at the section Division I finals, helping the Chargers advance to state.

DIEGO ROCHA, Santa Ana, Jr.

Finished 10th in the sweepstakes races at the county championships and won the Division I junior race at the Laguna Hills Invitational.

HUMBERTO ROJAS, Estancia, So.

Finished sixth in the section Division IV finals with the county’s 10th-best time, then 12th at the state finals with the county’s sixth-best time.

DEVIN SEGAL, Dana Hills, Sr.

Showed his best at the Mt. SAC Invitational in mid-October, finishing 12th in the team sweepstakes with the second-best time among county runners.
