Fresno Pacific Beats Vanguard

Guard Kristen Hurt scored 22 points to help Fresno Pacific upset Vanguard, 74-49, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday in Fresno.

Hurt made six three-pointers for the Sunbirds (12-13, 8-4), who moved within one game of the first-place Lions, ranked 13th in NAIA Division I.

Vanguard (20-5, 9-3) committed 26 turnovers. The Lions got within seven points early in the second half but Fresno Pacific then went on an 11-2 run.

Fresno Pacific led by as many as 27 points.

Kelly Boeke led Vanguard with 12 points and nine rebounds.

In another GSAC game:

Cal Baptist 83, Concordia 77 (OT)--Dawn Cason scored 30 points to lead visiting Cal Baptist (11-15, 4-8). Priscilla Bendik had 19 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for Concordia (19-6, 8-4).

In a GSAC men’s game:

Concordia 70, Cal Baptist 61--The Eagles shot 60% from the floor in the second half and outscored visiting Cal Baptist, 42-35. Josh Giles, who made seven three-pointers against Hope International earlier in the week, made five more, scoring 19 points for Concordia (14-9, 6-6).

At the New Mexico State softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 3, New Mexico 2--The Titans (4-0) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning on three New Mexico errors and a run-scoring single by Yasmin Massadeghi.

In earlier games, the Titans defeated New Mexico, 9-5, in eight innings, and Colorado State, 4-3.

In nonconference softball:

Hope International 3-8, Whittier 0-0 (2nd game, 5 mercy)--Jody Richards (1-0) threw a five-inning no-hitter and hit a two-run home run in the second game to complete the sweep for Hope International (2-0).

Charity McMillan (1-0) threw a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and Leslie Graves had two doubles in the first game.

Vanguard 7-8, Cal Lutheran 6-5 (1st game, 8 innings)--Vanguard scored four runs in the top of the eighth of the first game, then held on as Cal Lutheran scored three in its half of the inning. Jill Ramsey had a two-run double in the eighth for Vanguard (2-2), which has won 16 straight against the Regals (0-2).

In Big West Conference women’s swimming:

UC Irvine 155, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 145--Katie Ishihara and Sara Showalter each won two events for UC Irvine.

Ishihara won the 100 backstroke (1:01.01) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.30). Showalter won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.86) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.59). Ishihara and Showalter also swam on the Anteaters’ winning 400 medley relay team (4:05.47).

In a non-scoring women’s track and field meet:

Landa qualifies for indoor nationals--Monica Landa of Vanguard qualified for the indoor nationals in the 5,000 meters, finishing third in 18 minutes 32 seconds at Azusa Pacific.

In the All-Collegiate wrestling tournament:

Cal State Fullerton takes fourth--T.J. Hill (125 pounds), Babek Nejamaghaddam (197) and John Devine (285) won for the Titans in the 12-team event at Fresno State.
