Saddleback Beats Mesa in Baseball

Saddleback took advantage of sloppy play by San Diego Mesa to score 11 unearned runs and beat the visiting Olympians, 15-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday.

Sophomore Josh Arhart had three hits and drove in a run and freshman Jud Richards had three hits and scored a run for host Saddleback, which has won seven in a row.

Josue Lopez hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and had a run-scoring groundout.

Saddleback (10-1) scored five unearned runs in the second inning and added six more unearned runs in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead.

Freshman right-hander Tony Wright (1-0) came on in the fifth to get the victory.

San Diego Mesa (3-6) made three errors.

In another nonconference game:

Santa Ana 9, Long Beach 5--Freshman center fielder Carlos Pasillas had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three for host Santa Ana (10-0-1).

Freshman second baseman Justin Redding had three hits and scored two runs and freshman first baseman Tony Alcantar hit his fourth home run for Santa Ana, which has 16 homers this season.

Reliever Dale Thayer retired all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth for Santa Ana.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

Saddleback 5, Riverside 4--Saddleback, down 4-1, won the last four matches. The Gauchos’ doubles team of Karen Amos and Sara Jex beat Coral Conley and Cassie Sumrow, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, to clinch the match.

Santa Ana 8, Cypress 1--The only point Santa Ana lost was by default at No. 3 doubles.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Irvine Valley 6, Fullerton 0--Kevin Kim led Irvine’s 6-0 sweep in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. The three doubles matches were canceled because of rain.
