El Toro Stops Arroyo Grande, Winning Streak at 19

Visiting El Toro beat Arroyo Grande, 80-75, Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Southern Section Division I-AA boys’ basketball playoffs.

It was the 19th consecutive victory for El Toro (24-4). Arroyo Grande finished 22-4.

“We have competitors on our team who refuse to lose, and we have guys who want to step up and hit the big shot,” Charger Coach Todd Dixon said. “This is our 19th win in a row, and every game there has been a challenge, we’ve had guys step up.”

El Toro led by 14 at halftime, but Arroyo Grande tied it, 70-70, in the fourth quarter and had momentum. But Ashkan Nazeri (19 points) hit a big field goal, Kyle Martin (13 points) made a three-pointer and Matt Green (13 points, 12 rebounds) scored on a tip-in to again seize control of the contest.

El Toro made eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, and Ken Tanaka (12 points) made three of four free throws in the final minute.

El Toro plays Rialto at a home alternate site Friday.

In Division I-A:

Mater Dei 90, Thousand Oaks 43--Cedric Bozeman scored 19 of his 27 points in the first half to help top-seeded Mater Dei to a 41-16 lead. The Monarchs (28-2) will play Victor Valley.

San Bernardino Pacific 64, Woodbridge 44--Danny Lambert had 17 points for Woodbridge (19-9).

Villa Park 45, Cajon 42--Tommy Stankan made a three-point basket and a lay-up in the final two minutes of the game for host Villa Park (26-2), which will play Simi Valley.

In Division II-A:

Bolsa Grande 78, La Verne Bonita 70--David Doan made a three-point basket at the end of the third quarter to give host Bolsa Grande (23-5) a six-point lead. Jon James scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter for the Matadors, who will play will play Mayfair Friday.

Lakewood Mayfair 59, Fullerton 41--Michael Bridgford scored 13 points for Fullerton (19-8).

Magnolia 71, La Puente Bishop Amat 54--Vincent Bryant scored nine points in the first quarter as the Sentinels (23-5) opened a 25-9 lead.

Ocean View 59, Ridgecrest Burroughs 55--Marcus Crane’s fourth-quarter basket off a missed shot put Ocean View up, 53-51, and the Seahawks (27-2) hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Pasadena Muir 78, Servite 74--Ryan Gurzi (27 points) made three three-point baskets in the last two minutes of the game for host Servite (16-12).

In Division II-AA:

Santa Margarita 59, Littlerock 53--R.J. Socci scored or assisted on 15 of the Eagles’ final 18 points.

Temecula Chaparral 48, Valencia 39--Valencia, down by 21 points early, got as close as seven.

In Division III-AA

Corona del Mar 57, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 55--Kevin Hansen blocked a three-point shot with two seconds left to clinch the victory for host Corona del Mar (22-6), which will play Compton Centennial in the semifinals.

In Division IV-A:

Los Angeles Milken Community 55, Calvary Chapel 38--Tony Olivas scored 13 points and Joshua Sherman had 11 for host Calvary Chapel (17-11).

Orange Lutheran 74, Riverside Notre Dame 66--Jason Whieldon had 28 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals and Patrick Sayler 20 points, 13 rebounds and five steals for top-seeded Orange Lutheran.

In Division V-A:

Heritage Christian 94, West Valley Christian 47--Jason Grier had 23 points and Ryan Meyer had 22 for Heritage Christian (23-4), which has won 18 in a row.
