Buena’s 30th Victory Is a Bit of Perfection, 4-1

Buena High continued its winningest season Thursday when Natalie Sanderson scored all four goals in a 4-1 victory over Quartz Hill in a Southern Section Division II girls’ soccer quarterfinal game at Ventura College.

Sanderson, who has 34 goals in 30 games, wasted little time giving top-seeded Buena (30-0) the lead, poking in a loose ball off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Shameka Alford in the ninth minute.

Sanderson scored again 14 minutes later, redirecting a pass from Brianna Squires into the net.

Buena outshot the Rebels, 27-5.

“I usually don’t score as many goals in the playoffs, so I’m a little surprised,” said Sanderson, who has eight goals in Buena’s last two playoff victories and needs two to equal her total of 36 last season.

Sanderson was credited with her third goal when her centering pass deflected off two Quartz Hill defenders early in the second half.

In the 69th minute, she one-timing a cross from Kelly Nash.

“When you score 16 goals in your first two playoff games, it’s hard to stay focused,” Coach Trish Butterbaugh of Buena said. “I was a little worried going into this game because we haven’t had to play defense for two weeks.”

Quartz Hill (19-2-2) became the first team to score against Buena in the playoffs when junior midfielder Andrea Cabriales converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

“They just have two many weapons,” Coach Maury Cauchon of Quartz Hill said. “They’re going to win [the Southern Section title] this year.”

Buena plays Woodbridge in the semifinals Tuesday at a site to be determined by a coin flip.
