No. 5 Foothill Rolls Past No. 8 El Toro

El Toro, ranked eighth in Orange County, played fifth-ranked Foothill to a standoff in the first half but went scoreless in the second half as Foothill won, 6-3, in the second round of the Newport Harbor girls’ water polo tournament Thursday at Corona del Mar High.

Jackie Pirro and Gabbie Domanic, who each scored two goals, each had four steals to lead the defense for Foothill (6-1), which was tied with El Toro (5-4) at halftime, 3-3. Foothill advanced to the semifinals to play fourth-ranked Villa Park.

In another Newport Harbor tournament game:

No. 4 Villa Park 7, No. 10 Corona del Mar 2--Kristyn Pulver scored three goals for the Spartans (9-3) in a second-round game.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Western 60, Westminster 49--Robert Turner had 29 points, 19 rebounds and five assists for visiting Western (6-7).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 1, University 1--Luke Boughen scored the tying goal in the 72nd minute for Santa Margarita (14-1-3). Maziar Mafee scored in the 15th minute off an assist from Mike Frank for University (8-4-3).

In Empire League wrestling:

Loara 52, Cypress 15--Jeremy Ellis (189 pounds) and his brother Joe (215) scored back-to-back victories, beating brothers Greg and Aaron McDowell of Cypress with a pin and a decision.

Joe Ellis, who played linebacker for the Saxons, returned to wrestling last week following an ankle injury he suffered during the football season.

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 50, Pacifica 22--Joe Bonilla won his heavyweight match with a pin in 26 seconds for host Santiago (6-5, 1-0).

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 54, Tustin 19--Saddleback’s Cesar Buenrostro came back from a 6-3 deficit to win by fall in his 130-pound match. Five forfeits by Tustin gave Saddleback (7-7, 1-0) the cushion.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 45, Los Alamitos 25--Host Esperanza (1-0) was up by two points when Elias Figueroa (160) pinned his opponent in 19 seconds. Esperanza had three straight pins after Figueroa’s, including two in 30 and 24 seconds.
