Villa Park Sinks Newport Harbor

Villa Park, ranked fourth in Orange County, rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat top-ranked Newport Harbor, 8-7, in the final of the Newport Harbor girls’ water polo tournament Saturday at Newport Harbor High.
Villa Park’s Kristyn Pulver broke a 7-7 tie with a goal from two meters with 2 minutes 47 seconds remaining.
But the victory wasn’t secure until Cindy Henn stole a pass intended for Newport Harbor’s Kyndra Cox with 15 seconds remaining. Then the Spartans ran out the clock.
“We had a great tournament,” Newport Harbor Coach Brian Kreutzkamp said, “up until the last quarter.”
Actually, the last 1 1/2 quarters.
Newport Harbor (11-2) led, 6-3, after McKenna Mosier scored her second goal with 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
But goals from Danee French, Henn, Pulver and Shari Meyer in a five-minute span pushed Villa Park (11-3) ahead, 7-6.
After Cox, who had three goals, scored from two meters with 4:56 remaining to pull Newport Harbor even, 7-7, Pulver provided the game-winner.
In the third-place game:
No. 5 Foothill 7, No. 2 Santa Margarita 6--Gabbie Domanic, who had three goals, made a crucial steal with 17 seconds remaining to help preserve the victory for the Knights (7-2).
In the final of the Western girls’ water polo tournament:
Santa Monica 6, El Modena 5--Gaby Garcia scored two goals for El Modena. The Vanguards defeated Cypress, 6-5, in the semifinals.
In the final of the Virginia Duals wrestling tournament:
Cincinnati Moeller 27, Calvary Chapel 22--Calvary Chapel held a 10-point lead with four matches remaining, but lost on three decisions and a pin at Hampton, Va. Calvary Chapel defeated Camden (S.C.), 33-28, in the semifinals.
In Sunset League boys’ soccer:
No. 2 Fountain Valley 2, No. 3 Huntington Beach 1--John Clark scored on headers in the 23rd and 65th minutes for Fountain Valley (11-1-1, 2-0). Cliff McKinley assisted on both goals.
Scott Taylor scored late in the first half for Huntington Beach (10-1-1, 1-1).
In the Katella girls’ soccer tournament:
Sunny Hills 3, Jurupa Valley 1--Megan Broshak scored two goals for Sunny Hills (11-4-1), which advanced to the semifinals. Jurupa Valley is ranked sixth in Southern Section Division II.
