Woodbridge Settles for Unsatisfying Tie

Share

Playing to a tie wasn’t such a bad thing for the Woodbridge girls’ soccer team a year ago. The Warriors tied their opponent eight times last season, including Newhall Hart in the Southern Section Division II championship game.

But Tuesday, Woodbridge, ranked third in the county, played to a disappointing 2-2 tie with fourth-ranked Aliso Niguel after giving up a late goal in a Sea View League game at Aliso Niguel High.

“They’re coming in here expecting to do well,” Woodbridge Coach Jon Szczuka said. “When they don’t, it gets a little frustrating.”

Woodbridge (8-2-2, 1-0-2), which entered the season ranked No. 1 in the county, held a 2-1 lead with about 15 minutes remaining when an Aliso Niguel throw-in took a high hop into the penalty box and Aliso Niguel’s Sheena Jarvis scored, beating Woodbridge goalkeeper Janelle Godges to her right. The Wolverines are 9-1-3, 1-0-1.
