Dynamic Dorsey Duo Wins Doubles Title

Share

Seniors Geoffrey Grey and Dmitri Ketchens of Dorsey completed their impressive run through the City Section doubles tournament Wednesday, defeating top-seeded Alex Leb and Matt Berman of Palisades, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship match at Warner Center Tennis Club in Woodland Hills.

Second-seeded Grey and Ketchens won 60 of 77 games and did not lose a set in five playoff matches.

Berman netted a volley on deuce point to give the Dorsey duo an early service break, then double faulted to fall behind another break. Berman’s forehand volley winner broke Grey in the next game, but he volleyed inches wide on break point to give Dorsey the first set.

“The key point was Geoffrey’s volley on break point,” Ketchens said. “That really kept the momentum in our favor.”

Grey and Ketchens lost only one set all season--in the City quarterfinals against University. “We play well together,” Grey said. “There was no reason to think we couldn’t win this thing.”

Sixth-seeded James Magsino of Woodland Hills El Camino Real won the singles championship by default when top-seeded Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth withdrew because of an ankle sprain.

After months of discussion and debate, the City Section Interscholastic Athletic Committee overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have mandated one division for its playoffs.

Most sports will remain divided into the City Championship and the City Invitational divisions.
