Pacifica Back for More With Defending Champs

Garden Grove Pacifica will try to win its fourth consecutive title and Cerritos and West Hills Chaminade will try to make it two in a row when Southern Section softball championship games in six divisions are played Friday and Saturday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Here is a look at each division:

DIVISION I

SANTA ANA MATER DEI (31-1) vs. SANTA ANA FOOTHILL (32-2), Saturday, 7:30 p.m.--Mater Dei returns to the final after losing in last year’s championship game to Valley View of Moreno Valley. Tia Bollinger pitched Mater Dei into the final with a perfect game in the Monarchs’ eight-inning, 1-0, semifinal victory over Camarillo. Bollinger (30-1), who will attend Washington, struck out 11 while throwing only 79 pitches. Foothill defeated Etiwanda, 3-0, in the semifinals behind pitcher Courtney Fossatti (23-1). Etiwanda had beaten Valley View and pitcher Keira Goerl in the quarterfinals.

DIVISION II

CERRITOS (30-2) vs. CORONA (29-3), Saturday, 10 a.m.--Defending champion Cerritos handed Corona all three of its losses this season. Cerritos is led by Florida State-bound left-hander Jessica van der Linden. Van der Linden (24-2) struck out 15 and Nichole Maddox hit a two-run home run in the Dons’ 2-1 semifinal victory over Thousand Oaks. Corona pitcher Kristi DeVries (29-2) has given up two earned runs in 228 innings. Corona advanced to the final with a 1-0 victory over Crescenta Valley. Corona scored on an error with two out in the seventh inning.

DIVISION III

HACIENDA HEIGHTS WILSON (27-2-1) vs. GARDEN GROVE PACIFICA (24-8-1), Friday, 5 p.m.--Top-seeded Wilson is led by pitchers April Valdez (11-1) and Jamee Juarez (17-3). Wilson advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 semifinal victory over Laguna Hills. Three-time defending champion Pacifica beat second-seeded La Habra Sonora, 2-0, in the semifinals as Jessica Marical and Kasey Clark combined for a no-hitter.

DIVISION IV

WEST HILLS CHAMINADE (18-12) vs. CALABASAS (20-7, Saturday, 1 p.m.--Defending champion Chaminade entered the playoffs as an unseeded team but advanced to the final by scoring the winning run in the sixth or seventh inning in each of its four postseason victories. The Eagles defeated La Puente Bishop Amat, 5-2, in the semifinals. Amy Rosson of Calabasas pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight in the Coyotes’ 1-0 semifinal victory over North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake that advanced them to their first appearance in the finals.

DIVISION V

THOUSAND OAKS LA REINA (23-4) vs. VENTURA ST. BONAVENTURE (19-10), Friday, 7:30 p.m.--Top-seeded La Reina is making its first title-game appearance since 1995 after defeating San Pedro Mary Star, 7-3, in an eight-inning semifinal victory. Sarah DiJulio’s three-run double was the key hit. St. Bonaventure is led by Annie Marostica (17-7), who pitched a two-hitter and hit a home run in a 1-0 semifinal victory over Cerritos Whitney.

DIVISION VI

BORON (20-5) vs. (22-8), Saturday, 4:30 p.m.--Jennifer Jenkins pitched a seven-hitter and Jessica Love drove in both runs for Boron in its 2-0 semifinal victory over defending champion Camarillo Cornerstone Christian. Linfield took advantage of eight errors to beat Van Nuys Montclair Prep, 4-3, in the semifinals.
