SOFTBALL

Michelle Gromacki, who led Cal State Fullerton’s softball team to a 45-15 record and a Big West Conference title, has signed a three-year contract. Gromacki, the Big West’s coach of the year, took the job on an interim basis in January after the retirement of Judi Garman. Gromacki, who played three seasons for the Titans, was Garman’s assistant for five seasons. She gave up an opportunity to earn a berth on the 2000 U.S. Olympic softball team when she became head coach in January.

* Bob Janko has been hired as the softball coach at Capistrano Valley, replacing the recently retired Joe LaMasa, athletic director Tom White announced.

Janko, a teacher at the school for 23 years, also was a wrestling coach for six seasons. He spent last year as an assistant with the softball program.

The Cougars finished third in the South Coast League, and were 14-14.
